Yeah.

I was messing around with trying to play sounds through the mobo speaker, but windows 7, 8, and 10 won't let you make hardware calls to it. Instead it just plays the alert tone though my headphones.

Yeah, I was trying to do that on modern windows.
My point was modern windows doesn't let you do that anymore.

I don't like the way DosBox emulates the PC speaker, it sounds nothing like the real thing.

Early OSs had very little concept of security since it was assumed that anyone using the system was knowledgeable about it and responsible.

In modern OSs, you could probably say that security is the #1 priority due to the massive increase in software distribution (meaning malicious software can spread easily) and the massive drop in user competence.
