It made Famitsu's list of the 120 best PS1 games of all time and was originally rated a 32/40. The team that made it was comprised of ex-Squaresoft people, which probably influenced its reputation.

They never are. Every single time I've ever played a "MUH JP ONRY PERFECT 10/10 EOPS WILL NEVER KNOW THE JOY" game after it finally got translated, it turned out to be mediocre. Not retro, but man I was so excited for FF Type-0 and then when the patch dropped I put 4 hours into it and never touched that piece of shit again.

Someone should make emulators that could overlay subtitled text over Japanese when a certain stream of data gets processed. Kind of like that one website that has the emulator that allows you to get achievements for retro games in a similar fashion.

It sounds retarded, but I don't know why it sounds like something that could be done. Leave the romhacking for people that want to play it on the original system with a burnt disc / flashcart, but have this hypothetical emulator that would satisfy the people wanting to simply just play the game because of how much people hype up the whole "it's an amazing gem like u don even kno"

I'm part of a small group that formed recently to translate some more obscure PC-98 titles and there is so much involved in even the simpler titles it's not even funny. I just translate but I do see how much goes into the hacking and reverse engineering and it's quite a bit.

I used to sub anime and translate manga and the difference between that and romhacking games is pretty stark.

But that's what most people think in Japan. Few people praise the rest as "masterpieces". I know a few people who played all Kiseki games and Sen 1 and 2 are rarely in the top of their list.
