Spyro thread.
The original game is a timeless classic platformer, and the first two sequels rode its coattails all the way to the bank. (Never mind the rest of them.)
The only game i've 100% completed twice. Finished it over 5 times too.

I'm guessing the first is the best one?
I made level maps with all treasure locations

What's wrong with that, besides everything that is wrong with that?

I'm trying to figure out the appeal of 2 over 1 for so many. Not that it's a bad game. Obviously, it's a very good game, too. But it's... not as polished, both aesthetically and gameplay-wise. It's still extravagant visually, but it isn't as well-crafted. It's not efficient with its means to spectacular effect like 1 was.
I think it's the "Warped" effect where, after the success of 1, the team got a huge budget and nearly free reign so they went crazy with it. So I think it's about that big-budget blockbuster feel that Crash Warped also benefitted from.

I've only beaten the first (not OP btw) and seen/played a bit of the sequels. From what I have seen though they look inferior with annoying characters you couldn't care less about.
A common issue with platformers in general. Giving us stories and characters that are shit rather than just a good solid game.

>annoying characters you couldn't care less about
That sounds like the third installment. Pretty much everyone is agreed that it's the RotJ of the original trilogy.

small correction

Spyro 2 is enough like the original in terms of his moveset, but lacks the exploration promoting levels of 1. 2 has exploration in it, but it's pretty sparce.
I don't find any of the minigames particularly difficult so I don't count that against it. Spyro 3 fucks up everything...
>>3828645
You'll either think 1 or 2 is the best
3 goes way too far with minigames (especially minigames that change the controls by sticking you in a vehicle or something) and also introduces new playable characters who are universally awful
People who like 1 the best prefer 1's exploration and point out that 2 introduced the minigames, normally citing the infamous trolley game as a particular low point
People who like 2 think that it didn't go too far with the minigames and like the additions it made to the gameplay such as swimming (no really, swimming in Spyro is great) and powerups appearing more often
People who like 3 the best get reminded that 3 was the one with agent 9 then go back to thinking 2 was the best
Additionally some people like 1's sense of loneliness and some people prefer 2's populated world
Really if you like 3D platformers you should play 1 & 2 and form your own opinion.
Also you should still play 3 because while a lot of people in the thread have badmouthed it it's still got some great moments when you're just playing as Spyro and there's no minigame shit. The comparison with RotJ is a very good one

lol ewoks

I think it's more that they ran out of ideas for the limited controls the character allowed for. The official reason they dropped Spyro for Ratchet and Clank was "Spyro can't even hold guns."

Oh man, I'm really happy you finished these. Bookmarking that imgur page.

Wow
Sad
>>3829446
Yeah I really enjoyed making them. Imgur wasn't working this morning but it should be working now.
>>3827978
The sequels also watered down the main platforming and exploration elements with minigames and "alternate" gameplay. They also fucked up Spyro's animation to look more rigid and visually unappealing.

Why is that bull so big on the cover
You'd think it was a secondary antagonist rather than a random enemy that only shows up in one level
>>3828880
Quit whining, gramps.
>>3827978
Any doubters ITT who haven't played the games need to just play them all. They're all great. Yes 2 introduces mini games and supporting cast and yes 3 goes overboard with both of the above, but they're all still really good. It's like a delicious piece of chocolate cake followed by two more pieces of cake that have sprinkles that kind of interfere with the chocolate goodness, which some folks may like, but it's still fucking delicious

Honestly that bull had a bigger effect on me than fucking Gnasty.
As a kid I was waiting for the bull when I first started the game. I didn't even notice or realize Gnasty was on the cover until I got to him at the end of the game.

>tfw you had dreams about the castle on the cover and it being a super secret level you randomly found while playing the game

Loved this game when i was younger

2 is full of retarded shit for retards.

Swimming felt so right
Playing Spyro 2 for the first time.Trouble with the Trolley wasn't as hard as I expected, or is there another one later in the game, or in the sequel?
>>3830967
There's a similar mission at the end of the game that's a bit harder.
Trouble with the trolley is a weird phenomenon in that most people found it really hard as kids, only to return to it today and find it fairly easy.
I'm pretty sad we'll never get a Spyro game with 1's exploration and the swimming from 2
I really wish there were map making tools for 2 or 3
>>3830962
That's my tipping point, honestly. Having water makes the levels feel like they have more depth, literally.
