Does this game get any easier to play with an actual N64 controller?
I've tried every combination possible with both classic and gamecube controllers and none of them feel right.

i think gc controls are fine but n64 controller is better

Yes, S&P is pretty much the only game designed to use exclusively the N64 controller. It's designed around moving with the buttons on the right, and always having your finger on the trigger in the back.

I think I played it on a GameCube controller on the vc back in the late 2000s. It plays really well on the 64 controller though, kinda feels like a precursor to the dual stick control scheme that became standardized by games like Red Faction
