>Master System was more popular in Yurope than Japan.
>The FM Sound Module was only released in Japan.
Was there any reason why Sega of Europe never bothered bringing it overseas? I'm guessing they probably thought the gaming audiophile market was not big enough for the west to justify making a Master System-compatible version of this add-on.
>>
>>3791747
With sega's infamous cockiness, you'd expect that they wouldn't appreciate how inferior the master system's standard sound was to the NES.
>>
>>3791801

PSG is pretty good if the composer has skill.
>>
>>3791801
I can understand why they wouldn't in 'murrica, but the NES was never competition in yurop.
>>
>>3791812
It's still really fucking shite. I mean, the NES wasn't exactly great, compared to a real synthesizer, but it was functional. But the SMS PSG is awul. Only square waves and it could't even do lower notes. It's pathetic what they shit out here.

Some believe they wanted to add FM support in Europe. The PAL exclusive OutRun 3D does have a FM soundtrack and it's pretty nice.

Too bad OutRun on the SMS sucks dick. I'd still rather play Rad Racer.
>>
>>3791812
Not really. The PSG is a terrible soundchip. You have to choose between either 3 square waves or 2 squares + noise. That's a serious design flaw, and means you can't have cool chords and a percussion section at the same time. Not to mention the total lack of bass notes and the fact that the square waves only have one timbre as opposed to the NES's three.

Getting anything good out of the PSG is a miracle in itself. Even the Atari 2600 is more flexible.

>3 square waves or 2 squares + noise
>total lack of bass notes
What? No!? I think you are confusing something here. The SMS can use all 4 voices at once and there is even a way to get a real nice bass line, a 6.25 pulse wave. But you get that at the cost of the noise and the third square wave channel.

So you can either have 3 square + noise or 2 square + pulse bass. But you can switch on the fly and doing so improves the sound immensely. This is what it looks like:

And even without bass:

Though it might be unfair to just casually compare mortal composers to Alberto Jose Gonzalez himself.

Stock master system sound is ear raping.
>>
It's a shame, but alteast it's easy too mod.

You can't deny that even the best PSG osts are still weaker compared to the FM osts

But it still was behind, so they couldn't count on it making a good show. It just compounded with the weak unprogressive gamepad.

In Europe, there even were famiclones roaming around.

Unless they knew that it would be a stopgap measure and were planning the Mega Drive rather early?

Completely diffferent kind of PSG, not comparable
>>
>>3791747
Because the jap SMS had it built in and if you wanted it and could afford it you got that. Europoor SMS was designed for europoors.
>>
>>3792294
>>3792330
Metal Gear 2 uses a special sound chip anyway.
>>
>>3792343
Japanese SMS came out much later than the foreign models. It was basically treated as an enhanced version of the Mark III over there.
>>
>>3792294
that's wavetable, not PSG
>>
>>3791812
If it's something like the SID, sure. But why would sega have wanted to drain all that effort into trepidationfully remixing music from arcades and other systems, if they could have instead assured that ports from other systems could sound good and even make it so that multiplats might sound disappointingly on their rivals' machines? So they needed theirs to at least be a slightly more capable PSG.
>>
>>3791747
>>3792553

Reminder the FM sound module costed 6,800 yen (which was about $50 US in 1987, or $105 in today’s dollars).
>>
>>3792617
As a separate module, that's what they charged for it. But it was just an OPLL chip.

If that's what they went with, that's what they had. Yeah, it would probably been better if they had just gone with a PSG that's twice as capable. Or if they had the FM chip cut down even more, that would have worked.

But I doubt they could have been slick enough to include 3 or 4 FM channels and make the last 5 or 6 channels addable with another chip with comparable total cost to 1 OPLL.
>>
>>3792372
That's because it is an enhanced version of the Mark III
>>
>>3791992
>Alien3 SMS
man, I didn't know any games actually used periodic noise as bass in songs
seemed like everyone just ignored the feature
>>
>>3792728
Exactly, but originally it was only intended to be just a foreign version of the Sega Mark III.
