gotta ask since i see this so often -- where are you from? i keep thinking this pattern is from south east asian ESLs

also it's not the same name. it's a product from the then-recently expanded playstation line of products. are you mad at the playstation portable name too? or are you just for some reason thinking that "PSX" is some quasi-official abbreviation for playstation?

Not really, no - unless you just want to write off all the European examples as Ameribooism. Or maybe you can do some more mental gymnastics to come up with a reason to both believe yourself to be right and deny the global cultural impact of what happens in the U.S. Go ahead, I always find that sort of thing interesting.

the article you posted literally names PSX as a promotional tool for the US sales team and nothing else. random magazines with crazy names are anecdotal evidence at best. i'm from europe and we never called it PSX, ever, where i live.
>>
>>3791347
>The original Playstation was known as the PSX in Europe and America, but wasn't in Japan
>Their DVR device wasn't going to be released in Europe and America, but was in Japan
zero problems
>>
>>3791479
I know what quasi-official means as I studied Latin in grammar school. Did you?

It doesn't really apply in this case as we are talking about the released product which was never, ever referred to by any division of SCE as PSX. Ever.

Podex perfectus es. Futue tu et caballum tuum.
>>
>>3791487
I've seen PSX used in early Japanese press releases by Konami. I think the abbreviation might had been used early on and then felt into disuse.
http://web.archive.org/web/20010625161503/http://www.konami.co.jp/press/index1996.html
>>
>>3791480
PSX was the development codename for the original playstation. Tons of magazines kept calling it PSX. It was only defaulted to PS1 once the psOne units were released, and that was after the PS2 came out.

PS2 was called PSX2 by many magazines as well, up until it got released (with a large "PS2" logo on the side).

Just look up the playstation bios in a hex editor, and it will have the string "PS-X" inside multiple times.
>>
>>3791480
Did you only skim the article or what? "PSX" and "PS-X" were the official prototype/teaser names for the highly anticipated console for years and are also contained in the kernel of every Playstation. The abbreviation has been used continuously online and in print both in America and Europe for decades. To deny it requires some intense cognitive dissonance.

>>3791373
xbox 1 is xbox original
xbox 2 is xbox 360
xbox 3 is xbox one (1)
>>
>>3791672
Xbox 360 was only named as such because they didn't want to be a number behind PS3. As for Xbox One, people forget that the word "one" is as valid as a noun as it is a number. From my understanding, Xbox One is intended to be the last generation of Xbox console (e.g. The Big One) and that everything afterward will just be enhanced versions of the same console (aka thE iPhone sales model).
>>

Which is as much marketing B.S. as every other tech product puts out there. Why do people fall for this nonsense? Why do people fall for this transparent excuse for not innovation? Backwards-compatibility will be all but gone in the next-gen, but let's just pretend 'it's the same thing you liked before, but with better games!'
>>
>>3791803
I remember one of the magazines that circulated here in LatAm called it NGC at first, but at one point early on they changed it to GCN, saying that NGC was already taken by the NeoGeo Pocket Color.

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be short for "all-in-one." The original concept seemed to be a multimedia monster that would dominate the living room and give all members of the household ample use and reason to want one even if they didn't play video games, hence the emphasis on cable TV and sports so dad would see the point in plunking down $500 for the damn thing.

wasnt the codename for the console PSX?
so itd be like calling the switch a few years from now the NX, technically right.
i would believe the name came from the fight with nintendo when they were claiming the rights to tha Play Station brand name, so they just made it like PS-X as in like NEW playstation. i may be wrong about the reason, and i probably am, but its still the codename given to the console during the development, again like the NX and switch.

that just makes them businesspeople, to be honest. why would they willingly forfeit their trademarks? what's your agenda here, anon? sega shills get the fuck out
>>
>>3793261
They shouldn't had made the mistake of naming their consoles in the west after their company.

Everyone always assume that Nintendo and Super Nintendo are the names of the console and the "Entertainment System" part was just a descriptive tagline. Turns out you're actually supposed to say the whole thing or abbreviate it.

Not sure why they didn't just stick with the Famicom branding they used in Japan. I supposed they technically didn't use Famicom as a brand name until 1988, since that was originally just the abbreviated name of the console.
>>
>>3793265

you need to call it the Nintendo Entretainment System (tm) and state that its the intelecutal property of Nintendo Of America! dont call it a nintendo game, call it a Nintendo brand Game Software!

It was, and it was also an early marketing name (Playstation X). MAny magazines kept calling it PSX afterwards because it sounded *cool*. It was only changed to PS1 once the PS2 came out with big letters on its front saying "PS2" instead of PSX2.

>>3792825

Probably localization purposes, such as key config screens or tutorials, since they went with purple and lavender for the U.S. buttons instead of multiple colors. There's a few slip-ups in some of their earlier games, such as SimCity and Mario World.

To be fair, the PS-X was announced as early as late 1991/early 1992, back when it was supposed to be a Super NES with built-in CD-ROM drive. Still, it would be odd that registry card would ask you if you own an unreleased platform.

Also, Pentium processors weren't available until '93.

It's not there to disprove other terms, it's there to show doubters that the term PSX was commonly used in multiple territories, across a variety of mediums, both in the business and among gamers themselves.
It backs up anecdotal posts from anons who know the term was widely used, with actual evidence of its usage on the websites, print, and public forums of the time.
>>
>>3795294
the whole point of this argument was that naming the device PSX is a non-issue, since PSX never was the official abbreviation of the playstation. widespread usage does not equal quasi-official abbreviation. OP was a faggot for sucking up the meme abbreviation y'all are clowns for reiterating it.
