if Zool is revered by Amiga fans everywhere, for a game trying to copy the success of Sonic how does it fuck up a basic fundamental of running sprites that even Bubsy got correct?

No but it gives an effect on the viewer's perception of the game. When the body is more slanted horizontally, it gives a sense of urgency and speed to the player, even when the sprite is moving at the same speed. Artists make a big deal about gesture and line of action and that is still very important in video games. Stiff animations leave a bad impression on the player, especially in a game that tries to imitate Sonic.

He could be doing a Naruto-style ninja run and that would unironically look better.

I'm saying this from an artists' perspective. Graphics do not always make the game, but /artistry/ and a clear understanding of artistic fundamentals make a very clear part of the game.

it's a matter of following good artistic fundamentals that have been around since before you were even a sperm, not necessarily copying sonic. Sonic and Bubsy just happened to follow and do this correctly.

Notice how his body becomes more angled towards the direction he is running as he runs, especially at his longest strike. For bubsy and Zool, since they dont have the cartooney spin motion I use the sprite where they were at their longest stride for comparison, and Zool is still basically standing straight up when running, and it looks stiff as fuck and makes the game an eyesore to play.

Just look, the angle is as much as 5 degrees off from what I consider the minimum, just look at these two cherry picked retro sprites and this non-retro one, the fact that the animator decided to lean toward what an actual humanoid might run like, rather than copy a trick used to make lowest common denominator children think pictures are moving in the most obtuse way possible, makes the game absolutely unplayable and undefendable!
