Why was this graphical effect so popular in retro games?
>Kirby's Adventure, Super G&G, Battletoads, Dynamite Headdy, Skyblazer...
Why are tessellation and ambient occlusion popular in modern games?

Because it looks like cool 3D, but is simple as Hanna-Barbera cartoon. Back in SNES times when DKC wowed people with graphics, pseudo 3D was all the rage.
>>3774632
yeah whats with modern games having 3d objects with light shot at them what a retread gimmick
I can tell you're underage because you use the quote function like a /b/tard.

Nebulus was earlier, had better music and looked better.

It's called greentexting, Australia-kun.

You really are a /b/tard.
>>3774629
It's a bit shallow calling it just a "graphical effect" like >>3774632 when there's actual gameplay elements attached to it; sure it was used as a novelty in plenty of games (it was pretty pointless in Kirby's Adventure), but when implemented creatively it's so much fun

The whole final stretch of the stage here, man... the whole tower is spinning underneath the PC while the boss is supposed to zoom around it.

> Frog-type creatures climbing towers
It's a pretty obvious reference, but for some reason I never made the connection until now
>>3774629
What are some real 3D games that have segments like this?
>>3775218
Pandemonium comes to mind, but most 2.5D games will probably have something like it
post more retro towers
I hate these MMX ones; so cheesy and dull
>>3774728
Why do reach for the stars even as they throw rocks at me, that's what that picture is telling me to greent- I mean quote. But no, you get this plain text on a photon background.

>complaining about /b/ in current year
The new scapegoats are Reddit and 8gag, get with the times, old man.
>>3774629
Pseudo-3D effects were all the rage

What's the current year got to do with anything? if a piece of shit is preserved from 2003 to the current year sure other problems will arise as well but that original shit still sucks ass just as much.
It adds some visual depth to the stage, without being too noisy.
