I got the essential collection so i could play mgs1, i had already played the fuck out of 2 & 3 but never 1. i'd recommend that.

have you never played any mgs? if no id think it might be a good start. if you have played other mgs games but not mgs1 then you're gonna have a bad time. i didn't care for it and was expecting much more from the story but everyone seems to praise it so whatever.

He should emulate the MGS3 bonus disc on a ps2 emulator and then play MG 1 and 2 so that he can play the story in the proper order. Playing the MGS series out of order just fucks with the progression of narrative and mechanics. MGS 1 is a good game that I still come back to at times but it pales in comparison to MGS3.

I find it funny how MGSV's twist made the first Metal Gear even more irrelevant in the later games, considering MGS1 mostly acknowledged MG2 only anyway.

That's retarded when you can emulate the MSX2 versions much more easily and they both have serviceable fan-translations. Metal Gear 2 is not the same without the celebrity lookalikes for character portraits, consistency be damned.

Whatever you do, don't play the gamecube version. MGS2 controls break the gameplay, the color scheme is changed from blue to green and brown, ruining the atmosphere, the whole voice acting had to be redone and was redone in worse quality and worst of all the cut scenes have been changed into parody tier YLYL challenges.
