We just had this thread on /v/ last night. I see you included Half-Life Rally, International Online Soccer, and BrainBread this time. Thanks.

By the way, on my previous topic of genre bending Half-Life total conversion mods, I forgot to mention Master Sword. It's a RPG, like a full on autistic DnD spreadsheet type RPG, and NPCs can understand certain player texts. The character saves aren't even client side, they are saved on their master server and carry between servers. You're welcome.

Day of Defeat beta was so much fun. I was pissed when they turned it into a CS clone.
>>
>>3758508
What makes you say that? I've only played the final version of Day of Defeat, and it didn't feel like Counter-Strike to me. And I grew up playing CS 1.6
>>

Why not? Where are the mods going?

some of those gave me feels, back then I was very impressed with natural selection and what depth it created gameplaywise.

are there old counter strike versions floating around on the net? is it a hassle to get them to work at a LAN? I never bothered to check, but I'd love to play some 1.0 or 0.7.
>>
I got some of my friends together and forced them to play some goldsrc mods over a few weekends. Actually made a stupid video of our Bumper Cars and IOS evening. I fucking love Goldsrc but it's hard to gather enough people to play in general.

They're not going anywhere, but they're dead now.

Yeah you can get any version of counterstrike last I checked.

1.3 was best though.

Folks remade the WON network so you can still find games on the internet. (1.5 is obviously the most popular)

It's a shame, /vr/ doesn't have enough pop to sustain something like that, even on /v/ I was able to get a few people into a game.

Honestly Doom is the only engine with amazing support for custom content. From creating it to simply opening a browser, letting it scrape for the mods, downloading small file sizes, and joining the game with ease.

If only Valve made HL1 open source, then maybe we would see some purely sexual source ports similar to Zandronum that would make such things possible.
>>
>>3762481

Doom's moddability comes from how easy it is to do certain things and how nostalgic people are for it. Any retard can mess with ZDoom's scripting, rip images of weapons from a model render, then combine them to make a new weapon.
>>
>>3762481

Also, people have managed to do far more with older game tools simply because the editing tools (official and third party) were good enough that you didn't need the source, like with Doom.

FFS, people managed to make Quake Rally, a mod that turned Quake into a racing game, and that was well before the source code was released. Quake also had bots and all sorts of gimmick mods that would've been impossible to make with Doom back then.

>>3762492

Thus its allure, Its true you don't need source to do much, you still don't see nearly the amount of community content for Quake1/2/Doom 3. Half-Life isn't hard at all once you learn 3D modeling basics and the engine can do some neat stuff. I almost started work on a mod called Move In! but CS:S had just released and killed the HL modding community with a sledge hammer. It was pretty cutting edge: bloom, really nice UI, ARMA style aiming, counter-strike/Firearms mod style gameplay. Dev testing was a blast but the first release didn't catch on and everyone stopped. Wish Quake 2 or Half-Life would pick back up, it would be cool to see something like Gloom get a real polished revival with players.

I'm on Windows 10 like a pleb and I can't get Half Life 1, Opposing Force or Blue Shift to run. They just freeze and crash at the launcher. I'm using the Steam versions if that matters.
>>
>>3766328
NS2 started out well once they fixed the horrible performance issues.

Unfortunately the developers (under the influence of clueless community manager Hugh) killed the game through a series of horrible patches that would make glitches worse or radically change the game balance to the extent that everybody had to relearn the game. Instead of smoothing these things out, Hugh, who claimed to be in touch with the game's community, convinced the devs to focus on making the game more e-sports friendly. When that didn't work he convinced them to focus on casuals. When that didn't work the devs abandoned the game and handed development to the community who did some good work. Then the developers seized control of the game back and hired SOME of the community developers, not by the value of their contributions, but how much they sucked up to Hugh.

By then nobody plays the game except a handful of extremely hardcore players, but not enough of them to fill servers every night. But the game is still a shadow of its NS1 self. And it's not getting better.
>>
>>3766328
It's a very good tactical FPS but it doesn't hold a candle to NS1.
>Tech Points mechanic makes the games more predictable and a lot more static.
>Power Nodes mechanic makes all these crazy Marine strategies from NS1 moot. No more Red Room surprise Siege Turrets, no more sneaky Phase Gate in a remote location, no more Marine relocation.
>Alien commander makes all the careful planning and complete organisation from the Alien team almost moot as well, since you now have someone in charge instead of it being a team effort with everyone involved.

>>3766423
Yeah, I feel like hiring the guy based solely on his videos was a bad idea. They also treated a few long-time players and content developers like crap, who basically did their work for free.

1.04 and 3.0+ were excellent. A few people say versions after the combat mode was introduced were shit but I don't agree. Combat mode did divide the playerbase quite a lot and was a bad idea, but the game itself was and is still great.

>>

All of those except
>you will never play Action Half Life again
>you will never play The Specialists Again
are good things.
HL1's netcode was crap and those are the only two mods that made it playable for multiplayer. That being said, AHL kind of got some crap changes anyway and TS was basically it's successor - it also had some iffy changes and fixes it could have used that never got done. That being said you can still load it up with bots and play it.

The rest of the mods are also fairly crap. TS is almost a big enough loss to make your post worthwhile since few games will ever be released in history of it's kind. The rest were mostly buggy crap with poor design.

So this looks pretty normal right? The bots are actually half broken. They have no real driving AI and follow very generic nodes so sometimes they ride up mountain slopes, crash head-on into a bridge pillar or slide off course. Sometimes they will blaze past you and do instant 360 spins for no reason. Also they don't work on every map and they will just stall bugged. Still funny to mash the add bot key and see a swarm of retarded ants.

And here's a half decent shot when AI doesn't want to go full retard. For anyone who hasn't played Half-Life Rally, these are just a few shots to show you how legit this mod is. Unfortunately it doesn't bind from a controller so you need to map buttons to key strokes, which means digital steering. You can also earn money to upgrade shit like tires, exhaust, intercooler and turbo.
>>

>Unfortunately it doesn't bind from a controller so you need to map buttons to key strokes, which means digital steering.
I've played Counter-Strike with a gamepad for shits and giggles once (and walking was in fact analog), so I'm fairly sure you could somehow make this work as well

it requires some configuring via .cfg or console though

>>

it's actually JOY1, JOY2, JOY3... for buttons and AUX29-AUX32 for the d-pad

analog axes have their own commands for assignment as well as for sensitivity and deadzones
>>
>>3774780
I will say that driving with a mouse is very fun and much better than driving with the arrow keys, and is dead easy to set up.

Also not really related but I'm dying to figure out how to make content for HL Rally, so if anyone knows WorldEdit and wants to assist me that would be fantastic.
>>
>>3775757
Valve Hammer Editor is the official editor, but it's very old.

Jackhammer is modern and better, essentially improved over Hammer.

Mapping for HL Rally will be pretty difficult especially if you're new because the construction is very organic with the roads and terrain, opposed to making geometrically predictable rooms and corridors for a deathmatch game.
>>
>>3775902
I'm okay at hammer and have made a handful of TF2 and CS:GO maps already, but I haven't ever really used displacements and I have no idea what the required entities are for a normal map. Also taking it apart with bspsrc doesn't work and bsp2map just leaves me with a bunch of textureless boxes, missing entities and a headache.

You don't have displacement generators or tools for Goldsource, or at least you shouldn't be. The geometry is simple enough (relative to modern engines) that you should do it by hand for the cleanest optimization. I've done this years ago but this is a very macho example and unneeded detailed.
