Had the 64 DD came out like Nintendo intended, would it have saved the console?
>>
It completely and utterly flopped in Japan, why would you expect any other outcome in the US?
>>
>>3746994
If the N64 was backwards compatible with the SNES, and if the DD add-on used standard CDs, it would've saved the console.
>>
>>3746996
Please actually read the post before replying. Thank you.
>>
>>3746996
Well yeah. The N64 itself sold like shit in Japan. If Nintendo had tried it in America, it would have done a lot better since people actually owned it there.
>>
>>3746994
Did the Sega CD and 32X save the Genesis?
>>
>>3747020
The Genesis didn't need "saving". And the Sega CD did reasonably well. It wasn't intended to extend the life of the console to begin with, it was designed to compete with the PC-Engine CD.
>>
>>3747015

>Hurr so if this piece of shit wasn't a piece of shit would it have been successful?

Hmm, really makes you think
>>
>>3746994
No. Maybe if it had been part of the N64 from the beginning.
>>
>>3746994
No. It didn't have enough capacity to save a whole console. You wouldn't download a console would you?

>>3747027
kek
>>
>>3746994
why didn't nintendo just... you know... Make the 64DD built in or MAYBE better yet use fucking CD media. DURR
>>
>>3747152
that would have drove the Base price of the console up.
>>
As I understand it, it used magnetic (floppy disc) media which is fucking re tarded
>>
>>3747160
They could have charged $299 instead of $199. At least they would have had better features and 3rd party support. But nintendo are fucking idiots who like to gimp their own ideas.
>>
>>3747168
PC also used floppy until maybe mid 2000
>>
It would have been better if the system used mainly the ZIP drives rather than cartridges.
>>
I'm still disappointed they stuck with shitty cardboard boxes for games until gamecube.
>>
>>3747175

You mean they had a floppy? By 1994 there wasn't a piece of software or game that you could not also get on CD-ROM.
>>
>>3747178

Are you talking about the 64DD? It did use the same technology as ZIP although it was Nintendo proprietary.
>>
>>3747214

64DD failed just like ZIP failed. It's all starting to make sense.
>>
So, what the fuck 64DD did besides internet? It seems you can play every 64DD game on N64 using a flash drive.
The add-on at least increased N64 power in some way?
>>
It should have been standard arguably. Sure a 64DD drive costs more than a cartridge hole but Nintendo would make that back up on increased dividends on game sales (at least in theory).

Since the 64DD disks are relatively cheap compared to cartridges, it would actually be feasible to have multi-disk games, not to mention that the disks come as 64 MB standard.

Contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of PS1 games didn't need to use all 650 MB of disk space.

Hell, and we know it's possible, you can compress both CDs of Resident Evil 2 down to the size of a single 64DD disk with pretty much everything intact except grainy FMV. You could probably retain the original video quality by releasing it across two 64DD disks thanks to the power of clever compression.
>>
>>3746994
No. As with the FDS before it, cart storage space eventually grew large enough that most of the advantages of the add-on were negated.
>>
>>3746994
No, that kind of services in consoles wasn't even a thing for us yet and just in the hypothetical case we had had this, we wouldn't have appreciated it or let alone used it well.
>>
>>3747223
>So, what the fuck 64DD did besides internet?

It let the N64 access data off of a 64DD disc.
>>
>>3747228
>cart storage space eventually grew large enough that most of the advantages of the add-on were negated.
except that didn't happen with the N64

the largest 64DD diskette is the same size as the largest 64 cartridge
>>
>>3747246
>the largest 64DD diskette is the same size as the largest 64 cartridge
Exactly.
>>
>>3747018
So, only people who go "N64 best console ever" here are Americans? Not even Europeans or Asians?
Why do you US guys have such a boner for Nintendo anyway? Because of NES monopolistic years?
>>
>>3747257
Nintendo specifically aimed for the American market during the N64 years rather than Japan or Europe.

Anon, everyone needs to be saved
>>
>>3747249
...except the same size as a fraction of the cost
>>
>>3747274
So why not using the fucking magnetic discs as N64 standard media instead of cartridges?

because it would have increased the upfront manufacturing cost of the console

never underestimate just how insane nintendo are even to save a few cents on a machine
>>
>>3747294
>never underestimate just how insane nintendo are even to save a few cents on a machine
When you're manufacturing millions of these things a few cents adds up be a huge margin of savings
>>
had it come out?
The addon did come out.
It was a miserable failure.
Nintendos problem (like always) is their hardware is one step up from literal garbage.

Do you think Nintendo had some crazy intentions with the system that weren't realized? They had complete control over the hardware, and it made it to market.

Had OP been birthed from his moms anus with a brain like most humans are intended, do you think he'd still need his autism pills? Would he have made such a stupid fucking thread?
>>
>>3746994
too little too late
>>
>>3747168
Anon the point of the N64 DD was for it to have lots of writable storage.

Of course the N64 DD never had any good games utilize it. Maybe if Ura Zelda happened...
>>
So I guess /vr/ has become hot opinions and /v/ memes these days. Well had a good rub.
