The controls aren't really what make the original Postal such a pain to play it's just how movement is handled in general. The biggest reason Redux was made was to completely change how the Postal Dude actually moved and aimed.

They removed tank controls with Redux. It's a twin stick shooter now. Increased resolution and just completely improved all around. I have it and love it.

Considering the game came out in 97 and was developed by an incredibly small independent team there could've been a large overlap between when the game was finished and when it actually came out causing it to be one of those games made when people were still trying to figure out how to have proper mouse support.
