Let us play Myth 2: Soulblighter.
Myth 2 is a 1998 real-time tactics game developed by Bungie, sequel to Myth: The Fallen Lords. Myth has great multiplayer and a few campaigns, playable both solo and in coop. It is still supported by a tight community of fans that releases patches and hosts a multiplayer server.
Although it is possible to find and join games on your own, chances are you will get wrecked by players who have been passionately playing the game for years. Therefore, a handful of anons who just want to have some more casual fun have created a steam group to coordinate gaming sessions.
We welcome everyone who wants to join us. Normally we play through campaign missions in coop, but we can play multiplayer as well when we get more people. There are no requirements for the skill level, but learning controls and basics is highly advisable. If you want to participate, you will need the following:
1. Get the base game Myth 2 Soulblighter. As far as I know, you can not buy it anywhere, but finding copy otherwise is not hard (wink wink).
2. Get the latest patch from projectmagma dot net slash downloads slash myth2_181
3. Register an account on gateofstorms dot net – this is the community server
4. Join our steam group steamcommunity dot com slash groups slash myththevidya#
5. Optional: get some campaigns from tain dot totalcodex dot net
Currently we do not have a dedicated time when we play, so just message one of the group moderators when you join.

This was my favorite strategy game in high school (unfortunately haven't played in years). My friends and I played so much of the WW2 titans mod. Then the carnage map towards the end of its life (the one with helicopters, artillary, and a ton of tanks and units). Great strategy game

Well for me it became easier once I realized that units can gain experience and become veterans and also that you can keep your units throughout campaign if you save at the beginning of each mission.

Balor. The real question is whether the age of light or the dark will follow his defeat, or the cycle is broken.

About to play through both Myth 1 and 2 for the first time. I'm thinking of doing them at legendary difficulty.

I hate savescumming. Can these games be played without saving mid mission or is that too much of a challenge?
>>
>>3705258
It is hard, but entirely possible.

I recommend you to play Myth 2 Fallen Levels instead of Myth 1. It is a campaign from M1 imported to M2's engine. It has everything, M1 lavels have, music, cutscenes, etc. You can find the fallen levels on the Tain.
>>
>>3705258
I think you can avoid total savescumming, but should make some saves at least after key points in longer missions that consist of several smaller battles. The main problem is, sometimes you can lose because of simple bad luck, and it's tied to your dwarves and archers 90% of the time. Main challenge about legendary difficulty is related to your units suffering very high friendly fire damage. Dwarven molotov cocktail turns out to be a dud when it was supposed to blow out whole minefield right when the undead army was on it and you're screwed. Dwarf is hit by a Soulless while he's about to throw and he drops his bomb in the middle of your army and you're screwed. Archer misses Fetch with his last shot and he gets close enough to start playing Emperor Palpatine and you're screwed.

It's up to you to decide, but you'll quickly learn that there is no point in doing some 15-minute segments of the mission over and over again if you've mastered them already.
>>
>>3705258
>>3705370
Might as well add that under no circumstances should you try and go through Chimera without savescumming.

Here is a question to fellow Mythfags on /vr/: do you consider picture related strategy to minimize damage taken from Soulless as fair, or see it as exploit on AI and refrain from using it? Ranged undead will pretty much never change target as long as targeted unit is alive and in range, so berserker or warrior can do a little swerve dance to receive little to no damage from spears while your archers or dwarves destroy the whole stack in a matter of seconds.
>>
>>3706625
I think it's fair on legendary. They will usually be backed up by thralls and ghouls anyway.
>>
>>3706625

Fair, because everything is fair in this game because it's fucking hard and cunty.
>>
>no one mentions the overall plot and setting in this game

I remember, it was very thrilling. The intermissions filled with Narrator's voice was quite immersive and encouraged me to play it more.

The whole idea of Leveler cycle, the Tain and overall gruesome fights were a blast to me. On the other hand, I've never faced a thing called "fantasy" back then.
>>
I miss it when Bungie knew how to make more than one kind of game.

Definitely have to agree, after getting used to mid-90s RTS games which were mostly clean and almost "clinical", grimdark atmosphere of Myth blew my mind. Creatures of darkness looked intimidating and ferocious on game art, screenshots with ground covered with thick layer of blood and guts and limbs sailing everywhere after explosions, and that feel of despair and helplessness (you begin the game and the war is almost over, forces of light pretty much lost and whole campaign is desperate and suicidal attempt at turning the tides). I have to agree with you that journal entries and victory artworks were the greatest rewards after the hardest missions that required multiple attempts. If only there were books based on Myth world's lore, I'd buy them in a heartbeat.

> If only there were books based on Myth world's lore, I'd buy them in a heartbeat.
There are no books, that is true, however Myth lore and journals were heavily influenced by Glen Cook's Black Company. I very much recommend reading the series for the atmosphere of the books is very similar to the game.

Can modded maps work in multiplayer?

I remember I used to putz around in F&L and had a lot of fun changing the campaign, adding units and teams and shit. Would be neat to see if mulitplayer could be done in altered campaign maps.

Yes, absolutely. I am not 100% sure, but I think in the latest patch the game automatically uploads the host's map to other players.
>>
>>3707247

"Heavily influenced" is an understatement. I really liked the story of Myth until I read the books (the first one will suffice). Now I see how uninspired it is. From the Fallen Lords (the Taken) to tiny details like how knowing a sorcerers true name will allow you to fuck him up, there is not a SINGLE original idea in the Myth lore.

Soulblighter = Soulcatcher
Stair of Grief = Stair of Tear

etc. etc.
>>
>>3705258
>>3705306

I finished TFL on Legendary (no casualties) and I'm now halfway through Soulblighter playing in the same manner.

It involved a lot of pause abuse and savescumming. Soulblighter allows you to slow the gametime, so you don't have to use pause anymore.

Sure you can train yourself to make it without saves, but it would take forever. I would rather move on to the next mission (but first I treat myself to that hard earned replay).

Well shit that's really convenient.
>>
>>3718580
Yeah, unfortunately Myth is less "inspired by Black Company" and more "plagiarized Black Company."

Still love the games, though.
