Well merry christmas. Can we get a vintage vidya magazine thread going.
I know they're not too old but ive wanted them for years.
Pic related.
I have this in my Col. somewhere.
Usa dreamcast set.

look at all of those sexist covers

:D
I'm more into magazine coverdisks, I've collected a few thousand and made them public for research.

thats pretty interesting. Thank you for your hard work to the retro world.
BUMPO
Haven't looked at a magazine in years..
Arethere still videogame magazines?
Pc game I believe is still around, game informer of course, Official Xbox mag is still kickin if thats your thing.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_game_magazines
Also im interested in the ads inside these mags or comic books of the certain era.
Not old enough to remember these or maybe just didnt see em.
Unrelated, but is anyone up to date on what's happening with the /vr/ retro vidya zine? If it absolutely stalled I could help though while I have design skills I have never typeset a magazine.

I remember that issue partly because it was one of the biggest selling of all time for EGM and the magazine blew up like crazy. I think it was the Dreamcast launch issue that was the best selling of all time.
Also, no wonder Matt and Trey insisted on being way more hands on with gaming after their experience with Acclaim. There's a brief interview with them which said they specifically took the deal with Acclaim because they offered the Turok 2 team (As they both loved Turok 2) and they had a N64 and LAN set up in their office to fuck around and play Unreal Tournament on break times. So watching the Turok 2 team have to shit out a turd because of the absurd scheduling meaning it barely got any dev time and Single Player sucked ass must have stung.

Ya'll remember how insane Game Players magazine was?
The best was the letters to the editor section at the beginning... Man... those guys didn't give a fuck... My favorite editors were Chris Slate, Mike Salmon, and Bill Donohue
>thread about old gaming mags
>huge fan of GameFan
>spend the whole day, searching and downloading copies for old time sake.
I know I at least loved the layout of the pages, but damn if the early Halverson era's review sounded like it was written by a 13 year old, never mind the extremely lenient scores they were giving back then (yes, I'm aware Halverson reviewed games under differing aliases, and has shit taste for the most part).
Never was interested in the reviews till Mylonas (ECM) took charge. sadly, they had Spaz drawing the cover later on.
Kudos to them for never putting Pokemon on any of their covers, to the point of Nintendo congratulating them for it with a certificate

good god, I forgot about Bill and Chris. Some of the letters' replies were a chucklefest when i was a kid
>Chris was last heard working for MacLife magazine, and Salmon is apparently in 2K Games
>no idea where Bill Donohue is
hope the man's doing fine.

Does this have the Japanese screencaps of the first couple of routes? I think I owned this at one point. Blew my mind when they showed the screenshots of the new pokemon.
>>3699549
Yeah, it was a time that was pretty exciting time with the imminent US launch. Sega marketing in full effect. Magazines tended to get thicker for all the advertisements as the holidays drew closer.

I preferred Alpha (Zero) Chun-Li before she ruined her body from 2 onwards (story-wise). Of course she's no Cammy White, Juri Han, Elena, Ibuki, Makoto, Kasugano Sakura, Juni, Kanzuki Karin, and will have to take a back seat to them. I did notice that on the cover of that image too, probably purposefully covering the "kickers" part.

Where can I download those? That magazine was great and pointed me in the direction of a lot of games I liked. Sure they are as easily excited about practically all games as I am, but I do enjoy their enthusiasm.

only place I could find so far. not a lot, but I'm seeing some results on Google, so i'll try those later.
Halverson is unfortunately stringent with uploading scans of his old magazine, so expect dead links and the like.
>>3699723
I also remember people writing in pissed that they were "Dooming the Dreamcast to failure" because of a line on the cover despite EGM saying it was an amazing console, a true next gen leap and they gave Soul Calibur the EGM Platinum (All 10/10 review scores).
Fanboys, pfft.
>>3699691
yeah I think I remember something along the lines of this. This mag had a HUGE hype before the new game was released and im sure cashed in on it.

I'll dump a bunch of them on Google Drive and post them in this thread in a bit.
