Why did sidescrolling mech shooters die out?
They were such a cool genre.
Same thing that happened to most 2d genres - they went 3d.

I assume that's because sidescrolling shooters in general died out around the same time. It's a pity because sidescrollig shooter genre could have gotten a new life on dual analog systems. 3D mech games are pretty popular in Japan to this day though.
I wish Valken 1/Cybernator got a better follow-up… Leynos 2 wasn't what I expected, and Valken 2 was a strategy game.
>tfw Assault Suits Valken 2 is CyberKnight 3 instead
>>3673737
There's Assault Suit Valken: Lesbian Edition at least
>>3673696
because they're all boring and exactly the same
>>3673696
>die out
It was always a niche genre. There's only maybe 10-15 games that I can think of. But there's a few modern ones. Gigantic Army, and Assault Suit Leynos (remake) are new games made in the last few years.
>Leynos 2 wasn't what I expected,
Because it's a sequel to Leynos, not Valken.

There's also Gunhound Ex.
Assault Suit Leynos (which is retro, it's a remake) is kinda meh. Buy it only when it's cheap.

Ther eare as many sidescrolling mech games mad enow as in the 90's. They weren't that popular.
>>3673696
Because this
And thank god
>>3675393
Would Bangai-O be part of this subgenre?
>>3675935
I don't think so, it doesn't autoscroll
>>3675964
>autoscroll
what do you mean? Like in a shmup game? The games people are discussing ITT don't either.
>>3675970
nevermind, I misread
>>3675970
>shmup
There's that word again...
>>3673696
what was the best in your opinion
>>3676752
My rankings:
1. Metal Warriors.
2. Gigantic Army
3. Assault Suit Valken
4. Front MIssion: Gun Hazard
5. Assault Suit Leynos (remake).

pretty shitty game.
>Assault Suits Valken is a better Votoms game than any of the official ones
>Cybattler is a better Gundam game than any of the official ones>RayForce is a better Macross than any of the official ones
Why do licensed games lack all the passion that fanboy devs do?
Punching is weird in Cybernator. Sometimes it's 1 hit kill, but I remember I could barely destroy the first boss with it. What's the proper way to use it?

>>Assault Suits Valken is a better Votoms game than any of the official ones
I don't know, it's got space colonies. Feels more Gundam.

pretty shitty opinion anon

>please take my porn game seriously
Night Slave > Assault Suits
>>3674708
Night Slave was alright, one of the best action game for the PC-98 anyway, and with an awesome soundtrack to boot.
There's Dedenden! if you want a more recent mecha sidescroller with porn.

take that back you slag
>>3678595
It needs a moment to charge after each attack. Watch what is usually the ammo bar to see it or just watch the glow around your fist at higher weapon levels.
>>3680305
Yeah, I know. But weirdly, beating some enemies takes very long with it, like the first boss as I mentioned before. Is it supposed to act like it?
>>3680316
I dont know what to tell you really. Just tried it and 1 full charge lv1 punch killed everything expect the non shield mechs. There are more than enough P chips to gain a level of punch in the first level and you should be able to kill the boss just after it passes the 2nd platform with about 10 full charge lvl 2 punches.

Thanks. Sorry, from what you're saying it looks like I was wrong—it was a long time since I've played the game. I used to play it a lot, but after several runs the vulcan/laser combo kind of worn out on me, so I tried to use punch only. But it just wasn't as powerful as I expected—even with full charge and all. I remember it was great for weak enemies which you could kill with 1 hit, but not so great for those with more health. But maybe I just need to replay the game.

It's a pretty strong mix of both honestly. Setting and plot are Gundam inspired, but the gritty, industrial aesthetic and more 'traditional' weapon tech (As opposed to Star Wars lite) are definitely all Votoms.
