Not really, but you'll want to see all of the backstory relating to Kain leading up to SR anyway, plus there are numerous callbacks to the old lore and characters such as Vorador.

Mostly if you enjoy the gothic atmosphere and story. Gameplay is passable.

It's a 2D Zelda, Soul Reavers are 3D Zeldas. That's about it. PSX version has long loading times most evident when you change locations or access inventory, PC version can be brought up to speed on any operating system thanks to Cuban Raul patch and has no loading times but is slightly slower.

Although quite honestly, the plot driving the entire series is a bunch of pseudo-intellectual nonsense.
