What's the best handheld for emulation on the market right now?
>>
Modded PSP

Literally. Fuck that Chinese garbage
>>
>>3662185
just get a bluetooth controller for your smartphone, dummy.
>>3662190
i agree, if you gonna use a handheld it might as well be a real one.
>>
>>3662190

>unable to play many SNES games
>noticeable screen ghosting (on 1000/2000) or interlacing (on 3000)
>low battery life
>awful d-pad
>>
>>3662190
>PSP
>Max CPU clock speed is only 333 MHz

Enjoy playing your Atari 2600 games I guess.
>>
Gameboy Micro with flashcart

only play games optimized by Nintendo for the GBA

:^)
>>
>>3662209
>>3662210
I hope this PSP sucks meme spreads like wildfire so it stays cheap.

It really sucks OP. I mean sure, it's probably the best portable PS1 device out there, but who cares when Yoshi's Island is buggy? GARBAGE
>>
>>3662231
These days I can play just about every ps1 on my phone perfectly, and I don't have to suffer for lack of a second analog stick.
>>
>>3662185

Theres been a lot of buzz around the GPD lately. A quick youtube search shows people getting some fairly impressive results with a PS2 emulator running on it. Would've been the best for handheld emulation if it didn't have a weak battery life.
>>
>>3662240
The GPD XD has great battery life, it can last up to 11 hours. But I have a feeling your referring to the GPD Win, which at most lasts 4 hours.
>>
>>3662249

Yeah was talking about GPD Win. I think its the best performance on the market right now, and might be good for short 1 hour public commutes.
>>
>>3662238
Are you using the touch screen or one of those controller attachments? That's all I see with phones and both options seem pretty shitty to me. If there's better choices out there, let me know.

>>
>>3662268
Thanks. Definitely better than touch screen, but nothing that might tempt me to shelf my PSP so far (which I got for only a little more than what this is going for on Amazon).
>>
>>3662249
It's basically a scaled down cheapo notebook, the hell did you expect. I doubt Intel x86 cpus will ever be as energy efficient as ARM.
>>
>>3662240

fucking shill, your shit sucks, stop advertising it being capable of ps2, psp, vita and 3ds emulation

it clearly doesn't
>>
Mod a PSP-1000, or whatever model you prefer. 1000 is the cheapest.

Disregard any other suggestion. /vr/ is full of shills.
>>
>>3662185
I think the New 3DS is also a good option, at least it runs Snes games way better than the PSP.

The PSP itself is a great option, but it has been a while since the console began showing it's age and there's very little homebrew updates for it, so...

Also, avoid chinese handhelds like the plague. The screen is cheap, the sound is never accurate enough and the build is shoddily made on each and every model, including the JXD series.
>>
>>3662209
There's also the Go and Street PSP models, which are just as cheap and have none of the issues you listed. The interlacing issue on the 3000 is overblown, anyway.

>low battery life
1000 only. It's still going to give you more play time than any Android phone on the market, and it won't melt after a long gaming session.

>awful d-pad
What? Only the 1000 has an awful D-pad (it's far too sunk in to register diagonals properly). Educate yourself before you go spouting misinformation.

>>3662210
It emulates 2600, SMS, NES, Genesis, GB/GBC and GBA without a hitch. Not to mention it has native PS1 support. Sure, it's not going to give you cycle accurate emulation, but neither will any other handheld currently on the market.
>>
>>3662718
>1000 is the cheapest.
it also feels quite vr due to thickness, weight, grips on the back and warmer lcd colors, too bad they've seen a bit too much use, it's hard to get one in good condition.
>>
the gpd win is easily the best handheld out there right now.
good luck getting one tho. They're sold out most places and it's pretty expensive anyway.
>>

Pic related -- recently able to emulate PSP as well
>>
>>3664147
I don't really know if they homebrew will take off with this one, still harder to hack then a PSP 1000 and generally not as many out in the wild either.
>>
>>3663689
how big is the difference between ips and tn? i know the viewing angles and color are better, but is it enough to make tn seem awful? tn has faster pixel response, but does that difference matter?
>>
>>3664156
I've got my emulators and they're working great. I'm not sure I need any more f a homebrew scene.

Since the emulators are there and the hardware is great, since these devices are relatively cheap as well due to their lack of popularity, PS Vita wins.
>>

serveimage.jpg
129KB, 1000x1000px
Even if the Nintendo Switch has no game, if it gets hacked I'd bet it would be a sweet for emulation/homebrew on the go if you're like me and like a larger screen over being able to fit it in your pocket.

PSP was good, but its pretty old now.

Right now I guess the GPD Win is pretty good, though pretty expensive.
>>
>>3664147
>can't emulate Crash Team Racing without slowdown, along with a few other PS1 titles
>can't emulate SNES without either fucked up sound or slowdowns depending on the core you use
>MAME is basically unplayable except for super old arcade games
>SEGA Saturn completely non-functional
>GBA has slowdown on a few games
>literally no N64 emulator support

Lets be honest, emulation on VITA is pretty rocky at the moment. The only thing it does very well is run PSP backups via a PSP mode exploit. NES, Genesis, and GBC seem to work perfectly fine though.

It's getting there, but it's not quite there yet.
>>
When playing PS1 games on my PSP, what button do I press to change to lower shoulder buttons or change to right hand analog stick?

>>
>>3662268
Are there ANY phone controllers that are a little more slim? Like say the PSP-Go's?

I have a Galaxy Grand Prime. Tried to play Megaman with the touch screen controls, that was embarrassing. I like the idea of making my phone into a portable gaming machine but not at the cost of it functioning like a phone.
>>
>>3664526
Everyone that's tried has crashed and burned, even Google tried to make one but that fell through.
>>
>>3664526
8bitdo fc/nes30 or sfc/snes30. just don't fall for the pro versions, they are said to have shitty analogs, inferior d-pad and buttons.
>>3664045
the pictures in description are so full of typos like ANDRAID i have no doubt it's an average chink shit quality wise. i'd rather wait till the VITA is properly hacked and has good emulators or get a 3DS XL than some chink laptop that will be outdated in a year or two.
>>
>>3664172
IPS has a slower refresh rate, meaning it's absolute shit. Not to mention the IPS screen is poorly calibrated. Crushed blacks everywhere.

>>3662185

>>
>>3662185
Just my phone. Touch screen controls take getting used to but you can do it, if I can play through Recca with my shitty phone then you can do it too.
>>
>>3664282
>>literally no N64 emulator support
I use N64 on it and it is bad but it is playable. Like i can't hear the fucking sound on it without crashing.
>>
>>3665692
What emu are you running? Is it a retroarch core? I thought there literally were no N64 emulators at the moment
>>
>>3664282
I played só much gba games on my psp 3000 and I have never seem a single slowdown on them
>>
>>3665735
Well, keep in mind that I use my Vita and don't have a PSP, but Final Fantasy IV V and VI have horrible slowdown.

Crash 2 N Tranced also has slowdown on a few levels, mainly the ones that use 3D graphics.
>>
GPD WIN is currently the best, but it is expensive if you are only looking for retro emulation. Also as far as battery goes, it lasts forever for retro. If you're talking heavier stuff like PCSX2 or dolphin or intensive 3D PC games then yeah about 4 hours. I love mine but I use it for all generations of games. If I was gonna do retro only then I would have probably gotten the XD. I will never go back to touchscreen controls on a phone or tablet, and those harness things that hold your phone and a controller at the same time look ridiculous in public.

>>3664147
Vita will be big in the future, but right now it's not worth the investment. Wait til the price drops, or grab a PSP to tide you over.

If you have a buddy with an N3DS they don't want, look into that. Current hacking guides are pretty much idiot-proof, and it runs everything up to SNES handily. Not to mention CPS2, NeoGeo, Quake, Doom, Duke Nukem, and the system's own N64 ports.
>>
>>3662185
The N3DS is pretty good. SMT 1&2 play smooth with snes9x 2011 and it also runs cps1&2 games with no slowdowns. Native gba support is nice as well. It pretty much emulates anything under the PlayStation with no problems and it has the perfect resolution for retro games. It outclasses the PSP for sure.
>>
>>3666192
yeah but what makes the psp so good is it's so fucking cheap

1000 has a bad D-pad and doesn't support TV-out (good for testing CRTs).

But guys, I'll be totally honest with you. As someone who owns the Dingoo A320, Xperia Play, a modern smartphone, a GB Micro with a flashcard, a modded PSP Go and a OpenPandora - The Openpandora is BY FAR the best. There's really no competition.
>More powerful than any of the devices listed
>More than double the battery life of any modern phone (10h+ of actual playing time, no joke)
>Can run ports of old games like Jedi Academy, Serious Sam (F+S Encounter), RtCW, Diablo II etc
>Full linux environment, USB host, almost entirely free as in freedom
>150€ used
The best thing until the Pyra comes out.
(Though I gotta admit the GPD Win looks pretty neat too. Just wondering about the overheating and poor battery life).

Oh and one more final thing: I've used the PSP 1000 and later PSP Go as my main portable device for years. It has fantastic emulators and great ports (I must have finished Cave Story like 5 times on that device, definitely my favorite port). It's a great device, no doubt about it. But >>3662190 is wrong. In 2016, the PSP is simply outdated when it comes to actual emulation. I'm even hesitant to recommend the OpenPandora with so many cheap, chink Android devices out there. Many of them (including the GPD XD) are very capable of N64 emulation, something the PSP can't do at all. And even though SNES is playable (with speedhacks) on PSP, there's a great amount of games that don't run at full speed even with sound disabled and hardware acceleration. Compare that to the Xperia Play or OpenPandora and you have a whole different league. The cap there is N64, all SNES games I tested work flawlessly.

I still sometimes use my PSP Go to play PS1 or Gameboy games (or to play Cave Story) but for anything else there's much more powerful devices out there today.

S7800b. Never had any touchscreen issues with mine. In fact, all buttons function perfectly.
>>

Slim chances you will find any modern device with CRT out

But I do know the GPD stuff comes with mini HDMI out, and most android devices should also come with the ability to output through HDMI, though you will probably need a converter cable.
