Blue Stinger. I don't know, it's kind of slim pickings with these kinds of games as far as being /vr/ is concerned.

The Suffering, unsure if 1 or 2 because they look and play virtually the same. In fact second game starts exactly where first game ends and you can transfer the save file, since it has multiple endings.

Didn't age all that well, there is a lot of rooty tooty shooty but atmosphere is nice and mosnter design is top notch. On PC and ps2 era consoles.

I don't think you'll find much retro except games similar to Resident Evil. For those there's the Alone In The Dark series (the original and The New Nightmare are decent), Martian Gothic: Unification, Evil Dead: Hail to the King, Countdown Vampires, and Deep Fear. I haven't played most of them yet so I don't know if they're any good.

All of those are closer to RE and further off what OP asked for. I don't think it's a kind of game that was popular, if even made at all, before PS2.

The closest thing I can think of is that game which names escapes atm (I'll rememer later) that's on PC and the story is about an extreme reality TV show. Kinda like Illbleed before Illbleed.

Bokren hit detection making for infuriating gameplay. Otherwise it could have been a great game, lot's of background story, original but hardcore mechanics though, this game isn't for beginners.

More funny than scary. It's okay really, not great. The ever respawning enemies get old fast.

>Countdown Vampires
Probably one of the bests RE clones, but it has its share of issues too. Like sometimes enemy placement is really fucked (having 3 enemies jump on you when you enter a room before you can do anything..) and the game kinda drops the cake completely during the 2nd half. It's solid though, and quite long.

>Deep Fear
Definitely the most solid out there, and technically speaking looks and plays real good. Some cool mechanics and ideas too. However the difficulty and the puzzles are too easy. Also sometimes after you get rid of enemies, you may be spending quite a big chunk of backtackring with not a single enemy anymore in the place, which on top of the lack of music, can get boring.
