Plan on doing a full Baldur's Gate > ToB run, which classes benefit the most from starting in BG1?
Also general BG thread
>>3640405
I'm not completely sure about the hands-down best, i dont think the BG community have reached a consensus, but the worst are generally believed to be the Swashbuckler, rogues in general (though they are an obvious necessity), Wizard slayer and some of the specialist mage-classes.
With that said, any of the classes are viable especially if you use ultra-OP gear.
There is also a couple of really decent rogue-rebalancing mods.
>>3640405
I can't think of any classes/builds that explicitly benefit from it offhand. Some do drop off in utility as the game progresses, though. Archers, for example, are great in BG1, but melee fighters are strictly superior in ToB.

It's worth noting that traps are ridiculously overpowered. Rogues may not be very good in direct combat, but they can instantly annihilate any enemy encounter that allows you to set up traps beforehand, at least supposing you don't mind using such a cheesy strategy.
Starting as a rogue and dual-classing into something else after ~10 levels also has some benefits, and the XP sunk into it will cease to be particularly relevant by the time you reach ToB.
Bards are also very weak. The bard song simply doesn't provide enough of a boost to be worthwhile, and they're otherwise generally inferior to a fighter/mage.
I kind to sit down and do a full run of this game with very strict roleplaying shit
What sort of character should I make?
Is the EE still considered sacrilege around here? Are there any mods that get rid of the new story content?
I made a mage and he turned out rather well. They are not easy starting out, but they become like gods once they get their spells. During mid-game they will be doing good damage, charming opponents, summoning monsters and casting haste.
Just play a pure Cleric. That class is good with every level.
Reminder to play BG with the original ruleset rather than EE or tutu bullshit.
>That sweet, sweet feel when your paladin rolls 18 to every stat
>>3640767
Yeah right...
The probability for that is 1/6^18 which means that even if you roll once per second than it will still take more than 3 million years on average to get that roll.
>>3640797
it didn't take me that long and I've done it multiple times...paladins have insane minimal stat requirements so its way easier on them than it is on anything else.
For a non paladin class I've had it happen but it took like 4 hours

Druid. Three wisdom boosting tomes, and you can take the avenger kit upon importing without dropping two points strength and con.
>>3640405
Priests and rogues. You can boost strength from 18 to 19, instead of from 18 and a big fraction to 19, and this way, you can roll up with less hassle because you're not checking the exceptional strength score every time.

You can't stay dualled to a specialist mage in BG2. Only gnomes can combine specialization.
>>3640797
Paladins have higher than normal minimum stats. Str 12, Con 9, Wis 13 and Cha 17. So it's a sight easier to get all 18's. That said, Rangers have even higher minimum stats.

Don't be strict on yourself. Reroll, metagame, savescum and plan the fuck ahead. The game was clearly designed with min-maxing in mind and there is an assortment of shit that can and will one-shot you even if you do everything right.
If you try to play like it's tabletop you will be dead in minutes.

>there is an assortment of shit that can and will one-shot you even if you do everything right
Like, lightning traps which your thief was not competent enough to detect?
>>3643145
Oh a crazy woman. Guess I should help her. Lower the jar, Carsa.
>>3645293
I just started another game and had a fighter roll 18 to everything in about 45 minutes, which shocked me honestly but it happens, this it takes 30 billion years bullshit is hilarious to me
>>3640405
Well, Paladin is pretty good for all sorts of reasons, and BGII and ToB can net you a +6 Carsomyr (two-handed Holy Avenger).
>>3640465
>traps
Also this. It's pretty much an exploit since (vanilla at least) no critters have resistances to the kind of damage traps do, and you can lay down a ton of them. Enough to kill dragons, even.
