Doesn't it make you extremely anxious to think that retro-games are an increasingly rare commodity and it will eventually be impossible for an average person to afford them?
And that they'll eventually be too valuable to be worth the risk of using them?
Every game and console you see on Ebay is likely a console gone that you'll never be able to get if you don't pull the trigger right there.
>>3639949
Yeah. I'm scared for the day that old games will be too valuable for eBay and you have to go to special shops for them. Fuck every other collected besides me DESU senpai
>>3639949
You're wrong.
As time goes on and people forget about these games, they will become worth less and less.
Software is archived. I get that feeling much worse from ephemera.
>>3639961
If they forget, people haven't forgotten about centuries old books, and older prints are worth a lot.
Games will become increasingly rare as copies get lost, damaged, etc, and the supply will no longer be able to sustain the demand.
>>3639971
Truth, the software will never be fully lost, but the experience of playing a game as it was originally meant to be played might. I do get this feeling for a lot of things but I love videogames enough to give them some priority.
>>3639949
>>3639971
What this anon said.
The primary issue is that reproduction cartridges already exist, and the software is archived.
Theorerically in the future when 3D printers come down in cost, and they can manufacture even more precise parts, the plastic and materials of the original cartridges and systems will be indistinguishable from new reproductions.

>>3639975
Plastic with data is not valuable. Books, with aged paper written on by ancient theologians or authors is valuable. Books that can be reprinted are less valuable.
>>3639975
The form is only valuable to a select few hoarders. The music, or the game code itself, is data that is stored and will never age or be lost.
Personally, I am totally happy with reproductions provided they are 100% identical to the original and play 100% identically.
TecToy even now is making reproduction, literally factory specific and perfect Sega Genesis.
>>3639975
>If they forget, people haven't forgotten about centuries old books, and older prints are worth a lot.
Some games will be worth a lot, others will settle down to being worth jack shit.
>>3639975
Old outdated stuff isn't worth a lot just because it's old and outdated. Once the retro craze dies down and the 20 somethings age out the prices will drop and people will start going nuts about the next big thing from their youth.
Overpriced retro shit is all Nintendo, because Nintendo is still in business and they still use their really popular franchises regularly, so they're still well known.
Sega shit is way cheaper than Nintendo, so is Sony.
>>3639983
I do agree that if we get to the point in which we can literally start manufacturing old technology again on demand this won't be an issue anymore, but I don't think we should trust on that happening until it actually happens.
>>3639994
>What is Neo-Geo
SONY stuff will probably go up in price because the kids that grew up with it are already adults.
>>3640007
Neo-Geo is a particular subset of retro hoarding that's gone fucking RIDICULOUS. People spending thousands of dollars on a single cartridge are a special kind of mentally ill, and Neo-Geo is the exception, not the norm.
>>3640009
Well, you're not wrong, but what about the Saturn? It's pretty expensive and nobody had one as a kid (and that's partly why it's expensive).
What about the Dreamcast? Xbox stuff are getting more expensive, Atari 2600 stuff went up and then went back down but they never went back to being worthless like they used to, this things aren't getting cheaper, that's for sure.
>>3639949
>Doesn't it make you extremely anxious to think that retro-games are an increasingly rare commodity
no
why do you care
Yeah, I worry about not getting all the games I want before they're nigh unobtainable. Panzer Dragoon Saga used to be within my budget a few years ago.
Most things are saved digitally, at least. I hipe someone cares enough to curate all that shit when we're all dead. I'd hate for the more niche games to be lost to time.
>>3640105
>tfw Panzer Dragoon Saga's code was lost.
>>3639949
No because I already just about everything I ever wanted and even if I can't afford it there's tons of other methods to play the games both on and off the original hardware.
>>3639994
>Sega shit is way cheaper than Nintendo,
Saturn games beg to differ.
>>3639949
No. Even with prices as high as they are now it's still a really cheap hobby if you're a normal working person.
>>3640105
that's why I support emulation, all those rom files provide redundancy to keep games alive.
I dont give a fuck about that but im mad about people who throw away perfectly good CRTs
>>3640481
Wages in the US are pretty high compared to a lot of other places friendo. Besides i'm talking decades from now.
No, because I'm emufag master race
And the games I do buy I buy for collection purposes.
>>3640493
I'm an emu fag too but I would definitely like to play some games on their original hardware if I could.
>>3640492
I'm not talking about or from the US.
Obviously in several decades things will be different if someone wants authentic working antiques just like any collector's item of that vintage. But also remember that it only affects people who actually want/need original hardware. The games themselves and the replica carts and systems will still cover people who just want to play.
>>3640484
This. I'm a flashcart-fag for the most part so physical media I can take or leave but CRT's aren't to be fucked with. One day ours will break, there will be none left to buy and we'll all be stuck.
>>3640493
This.
I'll only buy a game if it's a must have, I'm a huge fan of it, type of thing. If that's the case then I'm willing to overspend a bit on it.
You guys see how expensive the klonoa games have gotten? I used to be able to buy klonoa 2 at the mall for $10, then $20, and now they're about $40. But fuck you all I'm hording multiple copies of this game kill me now senpai.
>>3639949
Emulation is getting better and better, so long as people still give a shit about games it will keep getting better. I will welcome a digital retro gaming future with open arms because the Internet provides a platform for an endless amount of archive space.
>>3641423
Is NES emulation really getting better? Or SEGA Genesis emulation? They're near perfect at this point but they aren't "perfect" yet, and I don't imagine there's a lot of people working to take it the one step further.
>>3641626
What's the difference between "near perfect" and "perfect" other than giving hardware snobs a hair to split?
As flash cart technology improves and clone consoles can be made, it won't be an issue for most stuff but what makes me nervous is things like 3DO for example which "are shit" will be lost to time.
Even stuff from European and Japanese home computers are being lost since they were never properly archived.
Do you want to play with toys or watch movies that your parents owned for 4x the price? Nope. Everything is going to stay emulated. The public says emulation is fine. The Nintendo logo and what people get at the store is all people care about. There will always be collectors, but there is a limit to the prices and eventually nobody will care anymore.
>>3641815
are the any, as Metal Jesus would put it, "hidden gems", for the PS2?
>>3641793
>Do you want to play with toys or watch movies that your parents owned for 4x the price?
There is an ample market for this. That's why vinyl and "gently handled" VHS tapes are in demand.
>>3641048
eh tech will come up that will be better than crt in terms of retro compatabilty
sad facts
>>3641852
Stretch Panic
>>3640020
Saturns cheap
>>3641743
>Input lag is still a issue, I suppose that's the one big tangible issue.
Only barely. If I can beat punchout without problems then it's good enough in my opinion.
>>3640008
Ironically on ebay i can find ps1's going for $50 while ps2's go for around $80
>>3642640
I can find PS2s going for $100+ despite them typically going for about $30.
>>3641871
> he actually believes this
>>3642656
>In 100 years we won't have better tech
>>3642701
>He really thinks anyone but retro gamers cares about retro games
>>3642742
I didn't imply that wasn't the case though. Are you implying gamers interested in older games are incapable of working on innovations and technology?
>>3642748
I'm implying there isn't a company that's going to improve upon CRT technology and that anyone interested in it doesn't have access to the facilities and manpower needed to make a viable product.
Let's be honest here too: Even if there WAS a company that improved upon CRT monitors for the sole purpose of retro gaming would anyone here actually buy it, or would the already incredibly niche market be divided by purists and people who just want to play games?
I'm worried that eventually all PS1's and other disc based systems will have their laser units stop working.
No, it makes me feel good that I've kept my stuff from when I was a kid/teen.
>>3642795
>I'm implying there isn't a company that's going to improve upon CRT technology
Okay, that I agree with. CRTs aren't worth improving on at this point, but there will be better displays. That's the point I am getting at. I have always thought CRTs were holding these games back though. They're ugly, crude devices with shit picture quality in even the best they ever got. Lack of lag is the one thing they have going that's still potentially an issue and it won't be for long.
>>3639949
Some day the consoles I care about will be cheap as fuck like Atari 2600 games are now. The newest console I got nostalgic over is the GCN and I can play that flawlessly on my Wii U
>>3642815
>shit picture quality in even the best they ever got
>>3639949
Meh.I can always emulate or use repros.
