How is this worse than any other Atari game? They're all shit. Is it a meme?
>>
Because most Atari games had a defined ruleset and a clear objective. Nobody knew what the fuck you were supposed to do in ET.

In any case, to answer your retarded question, it was mostly because millions of normies who never played a home console game before bought ET because it's ET and it were shocked when it wasn't the same quality as the arcade games they were used to.
>>
No, it's not a meme. E.T. is a legitimate contender for the worst video game ever made, and is solely responsible for the North American video game market crash in 1983.

Just look up the gameplay on YouTube.
>>
>>3633292

It's called a "manual".
Back then in the box there was a little book giving the story and explaining the objective and controls. I know, weird, right?
>>
Watch AVNG: The movie, at least watch his review of ET at the end of the movie.
>>
>>3633286
its a pretty crappy game but the worst game ever thing is definitely a meme. there are worse games and most people have never played it. its infamous for being a massive financial failure more than anything.
>>
>>3633294
ET is an entertaining part of the video game crash but to say it is solely responsible for the whole thing is retarded. dozens of garbage consoles and hundreds of shovelware games all competing with each other caused the crash. ET was hardly unique
>>
>>3633391

It's actuallypretty damn amazing considering the time left to pull it together, unfortunately in the rush the infamous bug with the holes came into the game which reduces playing enjoyment drastically.

For those 2 people who still don't know what time left I mean, here is the very short summary of this game's production:
After getting the rights the brilliant minds high up wanted the game to be ready for the holiday season that year, meaning Christmas! Considering shipping and all that meant there were hardly 7 weeks I think left- for EVERYTHING! Developing a concept with the characters, programming, testing etc.!
In these 7 weeks a game was made for the freaking bleepbloop ATARI 2600(!) that has

- coherent storyline
- a game world (just a few screen but again keep the system we are talking about in mind!)
- TWO unique antagonists with different penalties for being caught
- an item system
- score system
- all while still maintaining a connection to the movie it is based on

As you see it is in fact pretty amazing considered the time it was created. Unfortunately with such a strict time limit the point playtesting was swiftly shoved under the rug- and such the whole game is pretty much destrovyed by ONE false bit that leads to the hole collision detection make you fall in right again- and again, and again, riuning the game pretty much entirely. If thist single thing did not happen it would be a solid game for the time, not a masterpiece but solid.
Now the mentioned high ups in their brilliance had more carts produced than there were 2600s in the ntire country! They actually firmly calculated with people buying systems just to play ET! We all know how that went...

But there you are, don't talk about ET like that, it is a solid and in fact pretty amazing game regarding the circumstances and all the WORST GAEM EVAR!!1 youtuber need to be thrown in a hole, pulled out, and then thrown in the hole again over and over...

Just levitate sideways once you get out of the hole and back on the overworld map. The endless loop of dropping back into the pits is if you keep trying to levitate straight up.

I have played the game. It's awful. Sorry for having standards. And I feel sorry for your baseless projections.
>>
>>3633441

Most people did not know this and did not have the idea.
If they had have time to test it they could have added this as a tip in the manual if not being able to correct it, maybe even pretend it's a feature to add challenge. Pity.

>North American video game market crash in 1983.

When will people stop it with this meme? What was there to crash if there was barely any industry that mattered? Vidya only started being good (for home consoles) when the nips started producing them. Why do people stress so much on this "crash" if there weren't any good vidya to begin with?
>>
>>3633514
Sigh.

Please go back to /v/ if you're not even going to try to find out how gaming was back in the old days. Fucking children.

This is why /vr/ should be pre-1995 only.

Seriously, just about every post I make on /vr/ ends with "this is why /vr/ should be pre-1995 only". Can we just do it now? N64 and PS1 babies don't know anything about actual retro gaming.

ET is okay as adventure games on Atari go. A lot of people get upset with Superman because of its similarly unclear objective but I guess the difference between the two or even Adventure or Swordquest is that it's pretty easy to die in ET and when you do, it's not always obvious WHY you died. I think that in particular is the main source of real unparroted frustrations with ET in particular, compounded by it being a game that was heavily promoted and sold many copies.

I know you have more free time than you know what to do with during Thanksgiving break, kiddo, so how about you spend some of it actually looking things up before shooting your mouth off?

Oh, and be careful not to choke while rattling-off your secondhand opinions to your family at dinner tomorrow.
>>
>>3633564
>no you dumb fag it is not "solely" responsible for anything except a lot of wasted money fuck off
It seems you haven't done your research. Not only did the game bomb financially, but also critically and commercially. Retailers and parents were hesitant to invest in video games after a game from a popular franchise completely bombed.

>>3633608
Admit that you're wrong and just move on gracefully. You're shitting up the board with your incompetency. E.T. was a bad game that directly contributed to the crash.
>>
>>3633294
I'll grant you that E.T. is shit, but to say that it's solely responsible for the '83 crash is disingenuous. A lot of shovelware was being pumped out by multiple companies (including Atari itself, but also including a lot of companies that had no business being in the gaming business, like General Mills), which caused consumers to lose interest in home video games. Had E.T. not been made, some other game (for example, Atari's crappy port of Pac-Man) would have been the headliner of the crash.
>>
It's actually a mid-tier quality Atari title and above average for a licensed game.

Of course it wasn't very good overall but then again 99% of licensed games aren't very good.

E.T. is a bad game. But its not THAT bad.

The reason it is notorious is that it is more or less the first example of a licensed, big named title with tons of marketing that totally sank in the market place.
Its the precursor to other over marketed titles that have bombed in the market place (Like what happens with half of all "Triple A" titles now a days).

Before ET this hadn't really happened before since the gaming market was still so new.

lots of things lead up to the video game crash dipshit, not just ET, what the fuck

no single game can be so bad that it crashes an entire market
>>
Because it sold 1.5 million copies, making it the 7th best selling game on the system.

That's why people shit on the Atari 2600. Between it and Pac-Man (which was #1), it's clear no one had a clue what a good game looked like.
>>
>>3634780
Pac-Man wasn't bad if you'd never played the arcade version before.

>and is solely responsible for the North American video game market crash in 1983.

Oh yeah I completely remember seeing homeless E.T. in Wreck-It Ralph as a reference to it.

Fuck you.
>>
>>3633450

I find it unlikely that most people didn't have the idea. There are four directions you can go when leaving a pit, and three work just fine. Granted, you're already going up on the pit-view screen so when you move to the ground-level scene you might be most naturally inclined to continue trying to go up. That's a big problem. But I'm sure that very, very many people tried going other directions, and if you tried that once then you'd see that it worked, so you'd probably try it again later. It's a significant bug, but not a totally game-destroying one.
>>
>>3633286
Yes, it is a meme. The only part they fucked up on is they made waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy more copies than they needed to.
>>
>>3637536
You? Well you're a pee pee head. It's soaked in pee pee and then dunked in liquid doo doo. enjoy being so grossed out bc of it
>>
>>3633286

It has its problems but it's unusually good by Atari 2600 standards (which are, of course, rather low). It's just too unfriendly for the audience it was supposed to have.

Its popularity today (as a scapegoat and target of derision) is 100% bandwagon effect. Nobody cares about what the real "worst game ever" is, because the actual worst game, whatever it may be, is probably unknown and uninteresting. Nobody cares about most of the various other similarly mediocre games that have been released for all manner of platforms. This game is only famous today because of kids on the Internet wallowing in the pleasure of their negative emotions.
>>
>>3637536
I'm not wrong. And your literacy is piss poor. Get the fuck over it.
