Want to try out the Ys games, but there's so many releases for the first 3.
Can anyone recommend which versions I should play?

Turbografx CD versions for best music.
>>
>>3622240
get it on pc ys i II chronicles + and if i remember corectly it has the turbografx music as an option
>>
>>3622310
Whether you'll find the updated art appealing depends on your tastes.
>>
>>3622314
Maybe so, but the gameplay is a million times better. And the new art isn't bad by any means.
>>
>>3622310
>>3622339
And it also needs to be modded to support the TurbografxCD soundtrack, it doesn't include it by default.
>>
>>3622353
>>3622310
But Complete OST is better than Turbografx one.
>>
>>3622370
Then you're fucking insane.
Not that it really matters with such an awesome soundtrack anyway. Originally the OST was designed entirely within the limits of the PC-98. It just so happened to still sound awesome outside that environment.

I don't know, i just like the chiptune-y version more. But I agree, this OST is fantastic. Falcom really likes their musicians.

I am in agreement that the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16 ones are the best place to start, primarily for soundtrack. They were my primary reason for wanting my TurboDuo. The newer releases on PC are also very good. I am pretty hyped for Ys 8, I kind of hoped the game ran at the hyper speed as the early teasers had it at.
>>
Something about this series makes me warm inside. It's one of the first ARPGs ever and it's still going strong. Falcom jdk still gives concerts with Ys music.
>>
>>3622240
Ys I and II are fine on the Turbografx OR the most recent PC version. Ys III has the best soundtrack in the entire series, but the Turbografx version is much clunkier than the Genesis version and Oath in Felghana is a far superior remake anyways.

If you go for Ys IV, the Turbografx version is also the best out of all of them.
>>
>>3622497
Hnnnnngggggg. Can you post a picture that doesn't make me jelly?

>>3622510
You're certainly not the only one. I really don't understand what keeps it from being more mainstream.
>>
>>3622625
>I really don't understand what keeps it from being more mainstream
Falcom hates West and ports games with 10 years delay.
>>
Ys I and II (PC, or PCE if you want retro)
Ys III (PCE, though Oath on PC is a better game)
Ys IV (PCE by far)
>>
I played the PC-88 version of the first game and the scrolling actually gave me a headache after a couple of hours.
>>
Is it true that Ys I+II runs faster on some PCs? I thought it was meant to be that fast and chaotic, a turbo version of a typical RPG.
>>
>>3622707
No, but Dark Fact's bullshit meteors shoot out much faster the stronger your computer is. It's extremely annoying.
>>
>>3622663
They don't hate the west, but yes, they are very conservative with their production runs.

You can send a email to falcom today and request to purchase any games currently in production from their catalog, and they will try to work with you to make that possible.
>>
>>3622884
>>3622663
They are really stingy with their exports, but they have some... cute traditions? Like making a calendar with their characters, or giving their old games for free, organizing concerts and musicals... Are they still relevant in Japan? Like, Sqeenix-level relevant?
>>
>>3622375
>Then you're fucking insane.

Anyone who bashes Complete's music literally has no clue about Falcom music.

Sound Team jdk literally sampled/recreated the PSG/FM channels from Ys I & II on PC-88 for use in Ys I & II Complete. Around that period Falcom was also developing the Gagharv Trilogy remakes, so you can also hear these distinct FM-synth sounds in games like TLoH V. Complete is supposed to sound like a continuation of Hiroyuki Namba's "Plus Mix" series and overall the mixture of synth from different generations (such as Falcom's PC-88 and 98 eras) sounds exceptional. The added synth solos for many tracks are also extremely creative and just delicious.

And perhapd I should remind you that Koshiro thought that Yonemitsu's arrangements for the PC Engine CD version betrayed his original intention. These ports also lacks tracks from the original versions like Protectors for no reason at all.

>Originally the OST was designed entirely within the limits of the PC-98.

It was originally composed for the PC-88, you dingus. There's no musical difference between both versions, since the PC-98 port didn't use the YM2608 (OPNA).

People seemed to hate my silly Beetle Racing Adventure picture I took as a joke. I posted pictures in the Ultima thread which I am jelly that I was not the one taking the picture.

for I/II get the PSP port. It has options for a bunch of music and graphics from various editions and you can play it on the toilet.

Man now I want Ys VIII. I've put off playing Celceta since I only finished 7 a few weeks ago and I know that 8 is gonna take forever to come out if we even get a physical in the first place.

I snagged a celceta special edition shortlly after release after getting royally hooked on the series with I/II complete on the psp. I finished all those games on commutes to work, god damn I loved that psp for getting me into ys. Such amazing soundtracks.

nice collection anon! Sadly I only have the CEs of the handheld releases psp/vita but at least celceta has some neat shit in the CE.

What if Falcom could contract good English vocalists? They just never lucked out except when they got English-speaking ex-pats to sing for one or two tracks. I hope the talent pool's not too shallow these days.

Jury's out to determine if we're even getting Seven/Nayuta no Kiseki/Celceta/ToCS games on Windows any time in the future outside emulation. I'm not getting my hopes up yet.

Anyone else think they ruined it starting with Seven? I don't want to have a party in these games, just Adol. Yes it's autistic but i don't like it
>>
>>3626180
that's not autistic, it's fine to have a different preference. what's not fine is to label the series "ruined" just because it moved away from said preference. that sort of condemning strongman language and mindset sort of ruins talking about video games.
>>
>>3626179
you can import em anon, psp is region free y'know?
>>
>>3626190
well the series is obviously ruined in my eyes, it's not likely they're going back to solo Adol, what with this being game # 3 where you have a party

Dude, Ys II Complete has the exact same music as Ys II Eternal. When they made Complete, they updated the music from Ys I in order to make it sound consistent with Ys II Eternal.

I love Beetle Adventure Racing too, but that's a secret to everybody, they keep making poor guesses

>>3623712
I believe one can opt for either remix in more recent releases of Complete through options. However the ones that (Hudson?) scored on the TurboGrafx CD releases seem exclusive to that platform, which were my personal favorite remixes (maybe for nostalgia reasons). Eternal's soundtrack still very strong and great as well.

>>3626140
Adol's harem is pretty epic.

>>3626320
I am personally hoping Ys X is like Valis X considering aforementioned Adol's harem.
>>
>>3627398
For Ys I Eternal and Complete have vastly different music. If you were lucky enough to find the special edition of Eternal you got 2 extra soundtracks to pick from, all of which are better than Complete.
For Ys II find yourself an SC88, play the midi OST and enjoy something that's 10 times better than Complete's regular music.
>>
>>3627430
I'm in the process of slowly making most versions of Ys I & II's soundtracks ready to be used in the PC version of Chronicles. I've done all 4 versions of Eternal, PC-Engine, Ys Renewal and the SC-88Pro version of Ys II Eternal (though I wish I had a better source on that one, you can only get so much quality off YouTube). Gonna do the perfect collections and more once I stop being a lazy fuck.

You mean better than Ys II Eternal (= Ys II Complete), or...? Ys I Complete is still better than it.

Man, I really dislike how Chronicles ignored a lot of the cool extra sections added to Complete. I'd like it a lot more if it had those. And even then, live instruments do not "replace" synth, ever.

>the SC-88Pro version of Ys II Eternal (though I wish I had a better source on that one, you can only get so much quality off YouTube)

I made this FLAC recording for the SC-88Pro soundtrack of Ys II Eternal: https://mega.nz/#!EEgg3LxD!NyV51isHpKy25HOQ9hojSusxmGMpxAsjIDDXr2Aea1U
>>
>>3627841
>lol no
Opinions

For the rest you have my thanks for the flac recordings, will be good to replace the ost I got off falcom music channel.
And no Ys II Eternal and Complete don't have the exact same soundtrack. For example compare Termination from the playlist you posted and the one in Complete. The composition is different.
>>

>>

However if what you meant was (I've yet to get my hands on a copy of Ys II Eternal sadly and the internet is not hepling on the matter) that the CDDA music that came with Eternal was actually Complete's OST then it's my mistake.

I've always thought that the SC-88Pro midi sounds much closer to Ys I Eternal's style of music, hence why I tend to consider that the actual Eternal OST even if I'm wrong on the subject.
>>
>>3627859
>Opinions

That's fine, I like the GS and SC-88 soundtracks of Ys Eternal too. Just don't say Complete is utter trash, okay?

>However if what you meant was that the CDDA music that came with Eternal was actually Complete's OST then it's my mistake.

That's what I was saying, yeah. That the CDDA soundtrack of Ys II Eternal (aka the OST album, not the SC-88Pro MIDIs) is the same as Ys II Complete. This: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l76UNycd_L0 is exactly the same as: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNuIgx7huw8

Shame Falcom never published an album for the SC-88Pro soundtrack or the other two extra MIDI soundtracks for Ys Eternal. Oh well, at least a few tracks made it into the Unpublished Album.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7ekv6yONv4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9u34vbi_OCg

Saturn soundtrack is also interesting. Most of the tracks sound like prototype versions of Ys Eternal's CDDA soundtrack.

>>3627873
The best starting point would be the original PC-88 versions of the first two games, and then working your way onward in release order. No one likes to research, of course. Ys I & II Chronicles is also pretty good starting point, and a good number of people in this fanbase started from a push system game. Ys V might not be exactly stellar, but it's still a fun, short game with good pacing and worth playing. Ys VI, Felghana and Origin are a trilogy (not in plot) and must be treated as such to get the full enjoyment. Same with Seven and Celceta.

Ys VIII is pretty much the best Ys game so far. I expected Falcom to pull off a great game, but they really exceeded all my expectations. How Falcom made this on a handheld amazes me. I'll double dip for the PS4 version.
>>
>>3627925
I was overreacting, sorry about that.

While I'm generally not a fan of Complete's OST (Companile of Lane sounds like irredeemable trash I'm afraid. HUGE step down from the PC-Engine rendition) there are a few tracks in there that I like. Complete's rendition of Over Drive remains my absolute favorite of the bunch. Not even the arrange albums have managed to capture its intense feel.

And yes, damn shame we never got official albums for the Eternal Special Edition soundtracks. I'm glad I could at least get my hands on the midis, so I could turn them into soundtracks for Chronicles. I know you can just put them in Complete and they play right off the bat but they don't loop properly on my end so I gave up trying to use them.
>>
>>3627937
Both versions of that track sound worse than the PC-88 version. Oddly enough, the Chronicles version is actually pretty excellent. Maybe you'll like this one: https://youtu.be/2JmJoi5hnt8
>>
>>3628121
Oh absolutely. Chronicles really nailed it. My personal favorites however remain the PC-Engine and the Perfect Collection versions just because they sound downright evil.
