Let's try a "creative exercise" of sorts, /vr/.
Imagine if arcades had never declined. What would the games be like now? And if you want, what do you think the actual arcades themselves would be like currently?
Remember, we're assuming there had been NO decline of arcades whatsoever. So they're still at their 1980's peak and drawing billions of dollars per year.

An arcade game is designed to be beaten in about an hour.
So we'd see a lot more shorter games.
I think we'd probably have more stuff like Silent Scope or Time Crisis. Stuff that's got an emphasis on the casual market. Motion controls, etc.
There would still be the Street Fighters, and games like Raiden, but I think the trends would've changed just like they did with modern games.
Theres only so many beat em up's you can get excited about.
well, you'd have incredible graphics, i'm talking beyound current gaming pcs. also local multiplayer a lot. vr would probably be a thing, with setups like lasertag combined with the tracking technique of the htc vive.
if you are designing short games, 60min tops with the average probabyl very much below that, you'll still need tough difficulty levels.
also we would see gaming mechanics which would differ very much from what we have now available, maybe they would be comparable to mobile games like endless runners or something. on the other hand you need gamefeatures which are unique and only achieveable by arcademachines, that would probably mean unusual user interaction and a lot of different control devices.

>VR
This. I imagine LAN VR games (like mech piloting games) would be pretty popular do to their immersion and graphics.

Imagine if you didn't live in muhrica
Where no arcade games are made anyway
Imagine if you were older than 12

Imagine you lived in West Germany where arcades were banned in the 80s.

you'd probably have some sorta pass system. Fighters would take new and crazy directions, although 2D stuff would go strong.

Imagine you lived in your parents basement where everything you read on teh intarwebz was 9001% fact.

They prohibited setting up cabinets in places accessible to minors, effectively limiting them to gambling parlors.

Are we going to get into one of these muh llennial "words mean what I say they mean" things or just agree you were underage in the 80's?
Kids are verboten in arcades where I am. There are still plenty of them.
>>3620869
They would still have those appalling smartphone games
>>3622312
Yeah
I mean imagine Nintendo was still making consoles and Mario and Zelda games were still coming out every year, wouldn't that be amazing? Turns out not really.
Last barcade I made my way into had some indie pixelart games in a cab, with the creator's names listed by the title of the game. Because they're artists, you see. So: I would expect a lot more of those, and for Manly Normalfag Deer Shooter 9000 to be bigger than Call of Duty.
In conclusion there are infinite number of possible universes and all of them are hell.
why imagine?
visit arcadey JAPON

They would all be vr sex parlours
>mfw I'll never play After Burner
What was it like?
I can't comment on the games, but I can certainly comment on the community. It wouldn't be so introverted. Would it affect console gaming too?

Holy shit...

We'd have shooters. As always.
...clustered together for deathmatch. Maybe also some for CTF.
X wing vs. TIE fighter would be ported. Then, X wing alliance would be ported as XvT 2.
Worms would be ported, for huge screens with room for like 6 players.
One must Fall battlegrounds would have had a test release in the arcades.
Megaman would have had more arcade releases. Darkstalkers would have had more sequels.
>>3622649
Wouldn't have the same games.
