I had played all the Final Fantasies except 2 and 3 when 8 came out and I still think it's one of the better ones. (I don't think any of them are amazing)

8 is not my first FF but I sitll think it's good, just so flawed up the butt they had to ruin Xenogears to salvage it. Personally, I think they tried to hard to make a successor to 7 but ended up failing because the concepts just weren't working out or laziness, like that time dimension bullshit and Ultimecia and everyone lived in the same orphanage. Wtf? Also the retarded junction system. Otherwise, close to being a great game.

Then enjoy it. It's different from the other games but it's systems are fun to play with. If it weren't for the cast and plot it would probably be fairly high on my list.

I'm currently playing through VIII for the first time and I've played every previous FF. It's already way better than I expected.

Not amazing by any means, but I'm already enjoying it more than VII (which probably sounds like heresy but I didn't play VII until a year ago and nearly two decades of hype is hard to live up to). The Junctioning/GF system reminds me a lot of V's job system, which is probably my favorite game in the series.

Don't worry you're not alone. I got FFVII the day it came out and it couldn't even live up to the hype that was around then. That's the game that taught me not to pay too much attention to stuff pre-release.

I played and beat FFVII for the first time last year. I loved every minute of it, and it felt cool immersing myself in the real game after being exposed to the cultural impact of FFVII for so many years, and only experiencing the game itself secondhand via others.

no reason to try and make yourself dislike FF8, its actually not that bad, its unique in that a lot of his core flaws can be pushed aside due to the junction system and how flexible and exploitable it is, you can't do anything for its story, but its still got pretty good gameplay and probably the most addicting mini game in any rpg, triple triad was so liked they even put it in FF14

You can pick all the 'asshole Squall' choices and laugh at it, at least. I found the story entertaining shlock, compared to VII it's pure nonsense but you could tell they were really trying, for better or worse.

It IS a good game. It has a great battle system, great world map, the best FF bestiary with the least amount of monster recycling, and is overall fun to play.

I guess watching Spoony's series of FF8 review videos would be a start. Most of /vr/ dismisses them out of hand just for being from an eceleb, but they were groundbreaking videos which were among the first ever to really attack that game and lay out why it sucks.

All the complains he brought up, most of which are total bullshit, have been common complains from retards since day one. Hell, I even remember the most famous vg reviewer in my country, which had this TV show in which he'd play the first 20mins of games in live conditions WAY before Youtube even existed, refusing to play the game and instead someone else played and reviewed it in his show.
IIRC that was before the game was even released.

8 is the only FF I can stomach. I've tried to play through most of them but found them to be such a drag, really don't get the hate that 8 gets though (9 is also pretty good too).

FF8 doesn't really have palette swapped enemies. Unless you count the cactuar with a mustache.
It has a decent translation.
The original PS version had almost no bugs.
Overall it's very well put together.
