Full two-disc fan-translation next month. It will feature an improved translation for Disc 1, the debut of Disc 2 with Eng subs, and more menus translated.
If you'd like to try it out right now, there's a patch for Disc 1 out, which has two full paths (out of 5).
This is awesome! I've been replaying the PS2 titles recently and I've been wondering about the earlier ones. Apparently it even has anime cutscenes

Yea, there are a few here and there, they're done by Production I.G
Here's the OP to give you an idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYlBwbgT5fs
Since I have to wait 4 more days until I can make a new post on my project's thread on RHDN, I figured I might as well post some new developments here
First up, I finally managed to make some nice looking replacements for this kind of texture.
Pic related is the original, this was a test for the "GRDF" one.
>>3619261
and here is my replacement for this title.
In the end I chose not to replace the ones that already use letters from the alphabet as I got pretty darn close.
Here is the original of the katakana at the bottom, it says "Data Swallow"
>>3619274
this is my edit using the same method as the one I used for the titles
Original titles from the Search menu, the bottom three are character names
>>3619281
my edits here
While editing this kind of result, with the raised g's and y's kind of made me think I'd seen this before and after looking for a bit, I found it, the result was nice

It was R4 Ridge Racer Type 4, another Namco game.
If AC3 had been properly localized, it's very likely I think that Namco Hometek would have done it like this. Keeping the same font and do it with raised letters when they're present and just roll with it.
Example of a Search title (in-game glossary) taken from an unmodified copy of the game.
>>3619293
and here is the edited one from my build copy.
Original title, edited text, and also notice the Data Swallow on the bottom right again.
Now for the "Archive" menu, one where you can replay every video call, mail and news broadcast

Edited
(have to shorten the second title a bit, no biggie)
For Disc 2 missions and story, there's two of my livestreams.
https://www.youtube.com/user/DragonSpikeXIII/videos?live_view=503&shelf_id=9&sort=dd&view=2
Almost 8 hours of non-stop Disc 2 runs, full
So wait, what's the official localization like?

All the above is cut, Disc 2 doesn't exist, no characters, borked flight mechanics.

The Japanese version had 52 missions, with branching campaign routes that led to five different endings. There was a cast of characters with different motivations and allegiances, and multiple animated cutscenes.
The American version had 36 missions, on a linear campaign with barely any story at all. 90% of the story was told via cutscenes full of text, with zero reference to any of the characters mentioned in the Japanese version. The European version was the American version, except they didn't even bother to include the blobs of text.

Small update on the font style, I think they actually mixed in a serif font for the g's, like pic related, as well as the y's. They don't raise the lower-case p's so those a are bit cut-off.
Everything else is sans serif.

There are, you fucking weeb
Y'all done God's work.

Back with my latest test, trying to ape as close as possible what they did with the original.
The height on these is just 18 pixels so room is extremely limited here, even more so than in the body text presented above. We do what we can

Here's an example of a lower-case p without it being raised.

Yea, I know what you mean. At first glance it does look weird but then I remember playing R4 and it never really bothered me, just different and unusual.
Personally I was fine with that in my edits but then I looked deeper and found out that already had a format in place. They just got lucky in that no title showed these special cases, but the articles themselves do.
Currently re-doing about a dozen of these titles, the ones that need fixing. Only 150 more to go between Search and Archive titles /sarcasm
