Which version of Doom is your favorite, excluding the original PC version? Which is the worst?
>>
>>3618104
Favorite non-PC; PS1 (Doom 64 is it's own separate game).
Worst; your pic related.
>>
>>3618115
>SNES version
>worse than 3DO version
The SNES version isn't perfect, but its a pretty awesome technical achievement.
>>
>>3618104
I grew up with the SNES one and loved it.

GBA version is my favorite
>>
>>3618104
The gba version of 1 + 2. Being able to play anytime anywhere is nice. Also the 32x version is pretty alright.
>>
>>3618118
It is, I'm not denying that, but it's pretty much just a tech demo.

3DO is a bad port but at least if you put the screen size down it's somewhat playable, you can also see where you're going and what you're shooting at.

It seems only the most popular consoles got a playable port, even the Saturn version sucks.
>>
>>3618104
I hope one day somebody out there makes a high quality homebrew port to retro that's actually decent. The SNES port could have been so much better if they had been more willing to work with the hardware rather than just sidestep it and cram regular DOOM in by force.

The GBA port looks semi-decent, I need to give that a go.

Brutal Doom
Hell on Earth starter pack.

Worst probably is SNES Doom. It's the least playable by far.

Best? GBA Doom, obviously.

This one is my favorite excluding the PC versions.

How I would fix the SNES port:
- use mariokart style manual sprite scaling rather than hardware scaling (monsters would be visible and distinct in the distance)
- Don't use SFX2, a DSP for ray-casting would be much simpler and quicker. You only need to cast 256 rays across the screen
- Fix the laggy input and controls.
>>
>>3618104
Saturn is the worst it's unplayable. It's a slideshow.
>>
I really like the compression they used for the SNES port's OST for some reason.

It's like stylistically shitty, I've probably listened to that OST more than the original.
>>
>>3618706
>a DSP for ray-casting would be much simpler and quicker. You only need to cast 256 rays across the screen

Then you would be playing Wolfenstein 3D.
>>
>>3618703
I can't play this, it's too damn dark to see anything.
>>
>>3618975
You have to move the slider in the options way over
>>
>>3618996
Oh shit, didn't realise that was a thing
>>
>>3618706
>- Don't use SFX2, a DSP for ray-casting would be much simpler and quicker. You only need to cast 256 rays across the screen

If you are putting custom hardware in the cart, you might as well just put a cheap ARM core there and have it run the entire game.
>>
>>3618975
The brightness slider in the NTSC version is bugged. It's set by default to the lowest setting. They fixed it on the PAL version where the slider starts out in the middle thankfully.
>>
>>3618957
Doom is just Wolf 3D with more textures and angles.

>>3619021
In the context of the time. Whoever handled the port thought "DOOM is 3D, so we'll start with the most powerful 3D chip we have...", which was a complete misstep since DOOM is 2D and could have got away with much simpler hardware. As long as the SNES CPU didn't have to do any of the projection math, it would have been fast enough to handle the main game-loop.

I hear good things about this. I am allowed a backup copy since I never got an update, right?

>>3618703
I think there is a mod that gets these maps, sprites, and sound/music into the above, right? I have the N64 cart, but I am just not fully comfortable using the N64 controller for this yet (still).

This, but now that there is a Brutal Doom 64 I'll just play it on PC.

Why is the music on the SNES version so fucking awful?
>>
not sure if anyone mentioned the 32x version. it's actually pretty damn solid.
>>
>>3618104
I played through for the first time on my Pocket PC. Not ideal, but a decent port.
>>
>>3618104
PS1 is the best, SNES is the worst

I love both versions, though
>>
The best console port (not counting whatever modern port probably exists) is easily PS1 on account of actually running and playing decently. The new soundtrack is a nice bonus.

Worst is probably SNES. It's impressive that it even exists but that doesn't change the fact that you can't even circle strafe.
>>
>>3619221
Doom and Wolf3D use vastly different engines despite superficial similarities. Wolf3D is a raycaster, Doom used binary space partitioning. Wolf3D actually had one advantage over Doom in that Doom never had a real equivalent to Wolf's pushwalls. Being a much simpler engine, it could also run at a playable speed on a typical VGA equipped 286, while Doom really needed a high end 486 or a Pentium to shine.
>>
>>3621021
I agree on a gameplay stance; terrible sound design though.

>>
>>3618104
i only ever played the PC version but i did end up with the 360 versions of doom 1 & 2 when i got doom 2016.

aside from the censored wolfenstein levels is there any real difference?
>>
The one Bethesda made :^)
>>
>>3618104
I don't really have a favorite version though I do like the PS1 soundtrack despite it not really fitting the way the game plays all too well. As far as worse version it's gonna be either the 3DO or Saturn ones due to the abysmal framerate. Sometimes I feel the people who claim the 32X version is some travesty never looked up those ones because aside from soundtrack it totally blows them away in terms of playability.
>>
>>3618104
There are several PC versions. I doubt anyone in the Doom general has even played the DOS version.
>>
>>
>>3618104
the Mac version, mostly because it ran at 640x400 instead of 320x200
>>
>>
32x version was what got me into doom

I want to say I have. I also want to say most people played that one. Back in the day I want to say it was on a floppy and freeware. Which ran, in I want to say DOS mode. But dont quote me.

That was probably the shareware which only consisted of the first episode.

Can't believe nobody mentioned this. Besides the missing music, it was by far the best console port of Doom right up until the PS1 version. It's still truest to how Doom looked on a 486.
>>
I have both Doom 1 and 2 for the GBA.

The framerate is a little low, but they're surprisingly competent, particularly 2.

Honestly, Doom is the last thing I would expect to be ported to the GBA, and I was even more surprised when I found that Doom 2 was also ported.

I'm still hoping to find someone else who owns it so I can do a deathmatch on the new maps.
