I collect mainly for n64 but have recently had an itch to play some old PS1 games so I'm thinking of picking one up from a local store for around 25 dollars.
Any must plays for the system? Ps1 has always looked a lot more dated to me, is it better to just emulate or play remakes instead of purchasing the system?
psone or ps1? Or should I spend 10 more bucks and get a ps2

Anything by Namco, they were killing it with the ps1 at the time
Spyro and Crash are a must, CTR especially.
Depends on what type of game you are looking for in particular in terms of genre etc.

System is decently easy to emulate if you want to go that route

Any 2D game on the system looks like shit without 240p. For 3D games its mostly fine since emulator can render it at higher resolution.

Which often makes interfaces look like absolute shit. See: Devil May Cry
For a hidden gem I'd say battle tanx: global assault. Air combat and its sequel, ace combat 2 are both very good arcade flight simulations. Soul blade if you like fighting games. There's some mega man x games I'd recommend, particularly 4.
Like another anon said, the Spyro trilogy is god tier. Spider-Man is really good too, but I'd ignore the second unless you're a big fan. Oh there's also thunder tanks if you end up liking battle tanx.
Finally, besides a few platformers I haven't played, there's the large library of jrpgs, dino crisis, resident evil, gta 1 and 2, and if you like survival horror, Martian gothic. That last one is less mainstream but I liked it.
