Tetris DX is broken but also fun to play. It seems to have become less popular nowadays then back when it got released.

NES and GB versions are also pretty good. The one for SNES (with Dr. Mario) isn't as good unfortunately.

I need an "ambition" for this game. What do you consider a good goal for a respectable Tetris player?

Bullshit. It's literally the GB game with improved everything. What's not to like? No other Tetris has a better 2 player. Well, maybe Tetris Battle Gaiden.

Texmaster is the best Tetris version that I know of.
Been playing 10-30 minutes every day for half a year now.

On a similar note, with puzzle games, does anyone know of the best version of Puyo Pop? I have been playing Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine for ages now, but I would like to get into the original.

I just tried it, it's pretty cool that you can customize the music and backgrounds to whatever you wish, I may try that some time.

Also the later difficulties are insane, I am nowhere near good enough to be playing on any level beyond 200.

My favorite (not retro) Tetris is TGM 3. I'm a big fan of the TGM style in general and I like the first game a fair bit too.

NES tetris is basically a totally different game. TGM emphasizes speed over basically everything else and it shows.
