Yep, you hit it right on the nail. Sonic Adventure is what began the decline. Sonic Team's priorities after reuniting after so many years were way out of line. You didn't see Mario get divided into 6 different gameplay styles helmed by Luigi + new characters when Super Mario 64 was made. You didn't see a cinematic story get shoved into the game itself and interlaced with the gameplay.

It's really telling when Rareware can somehow make an RPG into a 3D platformer on the N64 but Sonic Team can't help but get carried away on a 128-bit console and turn an RPG into a broken, unfocused 3D mess.

Autismal as fuck I know, but it wasn't actually the PINGAS show that fuelled the furries - it was the other one, Sonic The Hedgehog (or SATAM). Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is just a silly Saturday morning show that stays fairly true to the games - much, much better than the angstwank that is the other show. Sonic and Sally even have a little inter-species kiss at the end.
