So now what's gonna stop Kaiser from including DOOM64.wad with D64EX now that everyone's fine and dandy with Mark flat-out including assets from the game in BD64?

Is GZDoom ever going to have going to have death events or shit that lets mods blanket add stuff into monster properties without replacing the actors themselves

Imagine, gameplay mods compatible with monster replacers and custom monsters.
>>
>>3593265

http://zdoom.org/wiki/Script_types

KILL is already a script types definition.
It has its niggles, but it's there.
>>
>>3593268
So in theory, somebody could take a mod like RPGdoom or whatever it was called, and make a universal compatibility patch that gives XP from any monster killed, adjusted with a function that checks the monster's max health and maybe some other properties and calculates it's power level based on that.
>>
>>3593242
Probably gonna play some Doom 64 and Blood.
>>
>>3593274

In theory, yes.
>>
Probably the wrong board to ask, but how exactly do Doom work?
From what I understood, it's a simulated 3D, but everything is on the same Y axis, so monsters and explosions have unlimited height.
>>
Have we the duke nukem world tour levels yet?
>>
>>3593290
Y is width.
Z is height which is the coordinate you meant.

Monsters have Z coordinates, and passing over/under actors is technically possible via Z-clipping, but in vanilla Doom it is generally ignered and reserved for monster-projectiles relations (projeectile can get under/above monster, other monsters can't). It's just explosions are calculated as cyllinders so they touch anything above/below anyways if they go off.

Heretic while using same engine without much alterations, applies same Z-clipping to all objects, allowing monsters like Gargoyles to fly over player's and mobs heads, as well as allowing player to run on barrels and other mobs.

So technically Doom is fully 3D, but it never uses that 3D to full extent. That's why many consider it 2.5D.
>>
>>3593305
unless things changed, the levels themselves work but the custom weapon and the monsters don't.
also it's kind of shameful that the flamer was so pathetic when powerslave has a perfect flamethrower
>>
>>3593290
>From what I understood, it's a simulated 3D, but everything is on the same Y axis, so monsters and explosions have unlimited height.
*sigh* no

Doom is a 3D game. Fireballs and bullets can pass over your head. You can jump out a window and pass above a powerup without collecting it.

However, because the original game didn't have a huge amount of height variation in the levels, Carmack took a bunch of shortcuts in the coding. So not everything bothers to take 3D into account. Solid non-fireball objects only check for collisions in 2D.

Then what is the system I'm used to, where Y is the height and Z is the depth? How is it called?

I think Worldcraft, Half-Life's level creator, used it.
>>
>>3593262
Legal reasons. Same why people are brohibited from distributing actual Doom.wad and Doom2.wad alongside their mods.

>>3593328
Ansolution was /recreation/. Levels were remade from scratch, by look and feel. It looks near identical, but it's techincally not using same (legally protected) data.

Doom64EX extracts all the original data with no alterations - it is exactly as it is on the cart.

>>3593329
3d may be actual real steam release of Powerslave.
>>
>>3593332
>Then what is the system I'm used to, where Y is the height and Z is the depth? How is it called?
its called functionally the same system, since swapping around two axis has no impact
>>
>>3593339
>steam release of Powerslave
Might be cool, especially if we get a level editor and workshop support with it, I 'd like to see some custom missions
>>
>>3593339
>Ansolution was /recreation/. Levels were remade from scratch, by look and feel. It looks near identical, but it's techincally not using same (legally protected) data.
From a copyright standpoint, this is basically irrelevant. If you trace over someone else's picture it is "technically not the same data" but it is still infringement (see: the famous Obama HOPE poster that the artist had to pay a big settlement over because he used someone's photo as a base without permission)
>>
>>3593332
>Then what is the system I'm used to, where Y is the height and Z is the depth? How is it called?
in 3D graphics, most of the time you are concerned with the camera's point of view, so X and Y are moving around the flat image space and the Z axis is moving in and out of the picture, since that's the most natural in that context

when dealing with a 3D space like a doom level, usually you prefer to use X and Y as horizontal traversal and the Z axis for moving up and down, since that's the most natural in that context

>>
>>3593287
Is doing it that way really resource intensive or buggy or something, or is it just a recent addition? I recall mods that use "x thing happens when monsters are killed" needing to replace everything with their modified monsters to function.

What about changing the properties of existing monsters? Like for example, if you wanted to remove hitscan attacks from the game in a global way, could you do a script that iterates through the whole table of monsters at map start, checks if they use hitscan attacks and replaces those attack states with ones that use custom projectiles with the same damage, attack rate and so on?

around map20 I realized that playing D4D with this was a mistake, the Doom 4 bfg (i.e: very scarce ammo) is not tuned to play those maps that were made with you bfg-ing everything half the time.

maybe d4d 2.0 is a different case.

And this is what I don't understand. Every time a new episode of BTSX is released a few Doom moralists throw a fit because of the bundled IWAD sprites that had to be adapted to the new palette in order to look normal.

We also have D64EX where Kaiser had to develop a tool to dump the ROM data, not just because of authenticity's sake, but also because of the reasons you just mentioned.

no? you can play whichever way accommodates your pacing, it's mainly got to do with preconceiving encounters, with just enough time experienced players know just when the map's going to pull some nasty shit on them, and some are tougher than others. I would advise, though, you should strive for making it as far as possible without saving every once in a while.

>>3593209
it's funny to think you'd be perfectly fine with it if it was yet another rehashed doom meme by any other name and that so much as a still of something you don't like is enough to put you off. some pretty petty shit.

Its not as simple as that when someone consistently only pulls the "its not hard" card on stuff thats otherwise consistently considered hard by the community. At this point I'm no longer convinced its a simple case of "its just tedious", and more see it as a case of someone stubbornly not wanting to admit their lack of skill and patience, and that anything that isn't within their comfort zone is automatically tedious and annoying.
>>
>>3594294
I dunno man, I've certainly played enough things that are supposed to be "hard" that end up just being tedious by virtue of extremely punishing gameplay that slows the experience down to a crawl (Not just talking about Doom here). Calling someone unskilled for disliking the type of difficulty in a "hard" game/map/whatever comes off as pretty snobbish.
>>
>>3594297
Its just as snobbish to always say "its not hard guys" whenever you don't enjoy something and find it tedious. It comes across as you undermining the skill and patience of those who do indeed enjoy such maps. I mean, You do realise hard and tedious are NOT mutually exclusive, right?
>>
>>3594314
Nice pseudo-accusations there, I'm not even the guy you were talking to. Hard and tedious are not mutually exclusive, but there is precious little overlap between them. When the "skill" needed to enjoy a map boils down to "take cover, shoot" and "press F5 every 3 seconds" there isn't much to be said for difficulty. Now, I don't find TFC to be particularly hard personally, but I'd be lying if I said parts of it weren't completely tedious. The ammo conservation required in some parts really slows down the gameplay and makes it less about dodging and shooting and more about counting bullets and having the patience to use suboptimal weapons to kill certain monsters.
>>
>>3594318
>When the "skill" needed to enjoy a map boils down to "take cover, shoot" and "press F5 every 3 seconds" there isn't much to be said for difficulty.

Thanks for proving my point.
>>
>>3594326
You don't have a point.
Your claim that people who don't enjoy tedious BS say so because simply because they lack skill for it is retarded.

Hellbound by map 20 it becomes a boring and tedious snoozefest despite looking great and throwing hundreds of mobsinto the fray at the same time. Sunlust does much better job at entertaining me, despite being bullshittingly hard and slaughtery towards the end. Does that mean that mean that Hellbound too hard for me? Not at all.

What? They can find them as unenjoyable and tedious as they want. My problem is that these people insist on also spouting "its not hard" when they're talking about something thats generally considered hard, like they're trying to disprove their difficulty. This is what pisses me off.

It would be a fair deal of work to remove all traces of Cyg, but honestly being an OP dragon dude is effectively the entire point of the mod, both in theme and practice. I didn't really find D4D as being a mod where it wasn't capable of tearing through a whole level set though even in 1.0 though.

It's because by Map 20 or so the game expects you to be bfg-ing rooms half the time, which is why it gives you tons of plasma.

In fact the orbiting shot addresses that very issue.

>>3594930
I really like the orbiting shot but it's power is really overwhelming to me.

I don't really see a reason to use the normal shot at this point unless I get a BFG cell from a monster and I already have the orbiting shot up.
And that's just because those pickups disappear

Man, I really appreciate well designed Vanilla wads. Because of the engine limitations, the mapper can't get too carried away with complex detailing. This means if they push the engine to its limits, the end result will be aesthetics that are complex enough to look great, but also simple enough to not look beyond ridiculous in the context of Doom. BTSX is a great example of this.

>>
>>3595283
True, I also like D4D's mechanics. I kinda grew tired of BD.
>>
>>3595281
Isn't that more related to download speed?
That's no big deal but there is quite a difference between these two but you need good headphones to hear it in the first place.
Whatever, for doom soundtrack there is generally only two acceptable options: midi(prefered) and ogg(good too). everything else makes the file size too big.
>>
>>3595283
Different anon but I think BD's hitscanners are pretty weak.

The Chaingunners do so little damage compared to vanilla and zombie riflemen don't hurt very much despite the boosted fire rate and accuracy.

Shotgunners can hurt but it always feels like they hurt less.

Then again I also play D4D on Nightmare only so everything hits hard when they land a hit

>>
>>3595325
>It doesn't even specify the sprite it's working with.
Yes, that is the point.
"####" for a sprite name inherits from the previous sprite.
# for a frame inherits from the previous frame.

Basically that line means repeat the previous sprite and the previous frame for five tics each iteration.
>>
>>3595329
Huh, I guess that makes sense, still, I can't help but feel this would be better served by not trying to work itself into decorate.
>>
>>3595175
The only things I'd want to see break vanilla engine compatibility in a high quality megawad are an expanded bestiary and jumping, just to see what experienced mappers could do with it and to see the world burn
>>
>>3595338
expanded bestiary is possible in vanilla.
>>

ACS can't work with weapons or weapon frames at all, so that really just leaves Decorate.

So I realized I sort of hit a wall at a certain point.
It's pretty easy to come up with standard shit to do (like turn something off, blow something up, kill all of these kind of monsters, destroy all of x, etc.), but I'm having a bit more trouble coming up with some more unique objectives for the player to complete. I mostly just want to complain about all the sequels. I tried Overdose recently, and it feels like they completely failed to understand what was fun in the game.

>>3596192
Great, now I want to reinstall Quake.
>>
>>3596195

Oh yeah they COMPLETELY screwed the pooch after the first one. But that first game is great, it still has one of my favorite starter weapons I've ever used in an FPS.
>>
>>3596195
Everything after Painkiller and it's first expansion are basically fan sequels sold in stores that missed the point entirely and were all awful.

Also if you want to play Quake again, there's a handy pastebin in the OP (the dated one) which has all the game files you need to run it with Quakespasm.
>>
>>3596196
Damn right. I'm thinking of reinstalling it and see how far I can get with just the first weapon.

>>3596197
Yeah, they completely missed it. I mean, Overdose introduces a lot of new weapons.
Pretty neat, hu? Except most of them are reskins, and the others either require you to micromanage (the dagger's alt fire), or lack the "third shot" option that many weapons had in the first game.
And let's not talk about the fact that they attached to souls to the enemies' heads, heads that are often sent flying due to the massive knockback, and thus the souls are lost.

The only things I dislike with Quake are the useless melee weapon, and the enemies having so many HP.
I understand they beefed enemies to compensate for having less of them, but I don't like enemies that can take half a magazine in the face.

I think the problem is not the enemies having a lot of HP, but the weapons being so weak. It's like the only strong weapons are grenade, rocket launchers, super nailgun and lightening gun.

Damn, just talking about it reminds me of how awful the shotgun is in Overdose.

Sometimes it gibs enemies at short range, and sometimes you need two point blank hits. What a mess.
>>

chainguns, rockets and plasma do the job.
>>
>>3596209
The grenade launcher is given to you early on in each of Quake's episodes and in most custom maps so what's the problem? It certainly can't be the ammo since ogres drop them and they're the most common enemy in Quake maps.

What are some good Doom episode one like megawads?

I'm playing through all sorts of mods and they often have things that replace the chaingunner or supershotty, so I'd want to load it with Doom 2, but I'd much prefer e1m1 style maps to test them on.

I had that when I, for testing purposes, imported several fully animated movies frame by frame as textures and animated them.
I also had a few custom decorations in that wad aswell.

loading up that .wad file would cause GZDoom to crap out on boot up, and every single texture and sprite would be replaced with only the first frame, and the TEXTURES file got replaced by the DECORATE file, which in turn got replaced by the ANIMDEFS file.

It was a fucking mess.

Episodes 1-3 are the original episodes and were released for mail order in 1993 as "Doom". Episode 1 also had a shareware release.

Episode 4 was released in 1995, as part of the new retail release "The Ultimate Doom". People who already owned the mailorder version could download a free patch to get episode 4, however.

>Really objectives don't matter that much unless it's important to storytelling

I'll assume you didn't read anything before hand, don't notice that "find the exit" is an objective onto itself, and you just saw "OBJECTIVES" and had to post. The point is to create different kinds of playthroughs based on what the player accomplishes in each level. Don't want to fight the archvile in level 1? Ok, but don't expect the processing plant in level 2 to be open, and if the processing plant isn't opened, then you can't shut down the toxic sludge run-off, which leads to level 3 having a good deal extra damaging floors. There are multiple of these in each level that affect the next level, etc. Some people, like you, just want to run to the finish line as quickly as possible; that's fine, but things will be hard, you'll get kicked in the dick on a few occasions, and you'll probably get the bad ending.

And Cold as Hell would like to see you in his office after class.

this is why I find doom to be an acquired taste, and most mods that give this approach a far simpler alternative (like Russian Overkill to name one) to be looked down upon by some others. I guess the community has grown accustomed to seeing lots of enemies per encounter per map that they crucify anything that has to do with doom that either doesn't make use of that style of play, or affects it in any way.
>>
>>3595209
Dou you will upload it to jewtube?
>>
>>3597038
The main point behind the SSG was for the higher HP monsters, though. You don't know true tedium until you try dealing with them with only the regular shotgun.

And if you're talking about slaughtery kind of maps, then you should be relying more on rockets and cells anyway.
>>
>>3597051
I played 4, 5 and 6, they all have different gear, monsters and even mechanics. I actually prefer v5's arsenal and bestiary over v6's by a lot, it even has things like type-specific monsters weaknesses (robot enemies are weak to explosives, humans are weak to bullets, demons are weak to magic etc.) and the monster item/weapon drop system is nice.

v6 is the one that lets you pick a theme for the monsters in the options menu so that it's not a mish mash (eg: mechanoids only) but I actually like the big monster mixup, then again I also watch saltybet a lot.

but yeah, play Warzone, it's the biggest mess of all.
>>
>>3597056
The Doom weapons are made for the vanilla game, but all the most acclaimed custom mapsets have massively increased enemy counts and use the more tankier enemies on top of that. The vanilla difficulty level is too easy for people who've played a lot of Doom, but the hard maps use a lot of dick moves and copious amounts of barons, mancubi, etc to raise the challenge. The regular shotgun, the chaingun and the plasma rifle are just dogshit at that point, and the rocket launcher's blast radius gets eaten up too easily by wide enemies or is useless against cybers and masterminds. The chaingun especially suffers from the way the challenge is upped.

A lot of the time I start getting to the later maps of a megawad I'm just wishing that all my weapons were upgraded a tier like shotgun->ssg, including the ssg, so I could kill the enemies faster and just get it over with. Gameplay mods often go too far in the other direction and make the weapons TOO powerful.

The plasma rifle shares ammo with BFG, and as long as you have a BFG using the rifle is a waste. With the scale of the monster encounters they'll probably hand you the BFG in a timely fashion so you'll be done killing the enemies during this decade.

And you can't deny that arachnotrons and mancubi eat up those rockets by being fat fucks. I also forgot to mention that cacodemons are often given a lot of room to move and be blown around, so the rocket splash damage is diminished against them too.

None of those things actually become real problems in vanilla Doom maps because there aren't shitloads of enemies to kill.

It's so annoying that you can't play Zdoom mods with Zdoom maps, because most of them include monsters that aren't compatible with the gameplay mod you're using.

You do realize that the SSG magically gets more pellets per ammo spent, and your insane fringe scenario would only be relevant if the map consisted of dozens of encounters where you fight a single imp or a former human again and again in a row?
>>

>fire shotgun once
>seven shots
>fire pistol once
>one shot
>one small shotgun ammo pickup = 4 shells = 28 shots
>one small pistol ammo pickup = 10 bullets = 10 shots
I'm not seeing it.

> You do realize that nothing in the game dies from one pistol bullet, right?
Everything that has 1 bullet hp left dies from 1 bullet.
> You do realize the chaingun does the same damage as the pistol and is actually MORE accurate because the first two shots are on target?
WASTE OF FUCKING AMMO IMMINENT
> You do realize that the SSG magically gets more pellets per ammo spent, and your insane fringe scenario would only be relevant if the map consisted of dozens of encounters where you fight a single imp or a former human again and again in a row?
You'd be surprised.

ive never understood what that's supposed to be? Why is it crushing the floor of a basement that's already made with rooms and everything? It's not like its drilling a hole.
>>
>>3597308
Basement is made from the other way. It's like cave drilling only downwards and outside.

Sunlust is nowhere near like those two examples. Holy Hell and Sunder map11 are overly lenthy repetitive monotonous slogs. Sunlust more reminds me of Speed of Doom, in that the levels are generally standard length, and never have encounters overstay their welcome for me.

Does TNT music count? Because I love Death's Bells.

Still better than Plutonia.
>>
>>3597172
Was it The Forever War? That book is as pretty good military sci fi read. Has mech suits.

Dunno if there is an audiobook version though.
>>
>>3597349
But Plutonia is way better, it's why everyone remembers it and played it on servers nonstop back in the ZDaemon days a decade ago.
>>
>>3597172
Oh. Also, keep up the power armor project. Shit looks neat.

I like both pretty much equally. They have their faults, but they're still a lot of fun, and there are some neat gimmicks in there.

This almost makes me want to start a little "No Detailing" map compilation where the objective is to make the best gameplay without any visual distractions to color players' opinions of the gameplay.

Holy fuck it runs at like 25FPS
>>
>>3597516
Completely bare maps are just utterly unfun to play, I mean, did you see a bunch of the submissions to Vinesauce Joel's contest? The early ones were tripe in more ways than just gameplay.

What you should do instead is to insert a limit, like a room can only feature one to three kinds of detailing, like maybe a room can have fancy indented walls with lights at the bottom (to contrast with the lighting in the room), and then it can have either a carpet, or a skylight, but it can then not add computer panels or pipes on the walls. Or a hallway, it can have carpeting and ceiling lights, but then not piping or stuff.

Detail, but minimalist.
