Honestly, I feel kinda the opposite way.
I use a medium-small monitor.
I want play some older games in res larger than 800x600, HUD gets small.
Sometimes so small, that its hard to see things, important things that HUD it supposed to show, like health or ammo.
However, I understand your sentiment.
I dislike big HUDs that restrict your view.
Ideally, modern games shout give you a separate option to scale/customize HUD to your liking.
Do you want just see your health and ammo? Done.
Additional skills and their cool-downs? Done.
A list of quests and objectives? Done.
Map and compass? Sure.
A motherfucking chat so you can see players calling each other faggots? Here you go!

But for fucks sake, don't make me see all that cluttered bullshit all the damn time without an option to turn this shit off!

There are even games like Empire Earth where your field of vision gets smaller with a higher resolution.

I'd rather have the HUD stretch via nearest neighbor scaling two or three times the original size if I'm playing an older game in a much higher resolution than what was intended.

I want to clearly see how much health and ammo I have at a glance instead of having to actively search for it.
