I've played and re-played Might and Magic 6-8 since Mandate of Heaven's release back in the 90s.
After some overwhelming recommendations to me by my friends and /v/-/vr/ I've finally decided to buy a copy of Wizardry 8.
This is my first Wizardry game. The only things I know about it is that it has some kind of limited enemy level scaling, the mechanics are far more complex than M&M, and is pretty darn brutal for beginners like me.
Are there patches(unofficial or official) that I should be installing first? Are there any well known quality-of-life mods that I should get? I'd want to play vanilla but if there are some QoL mods out there like resolution and UI enchancements, I am all up for it.

Get Wizfast which speeds up the combat immensely, otherwise you'll be tearing your hair out with frustration.

On it!

There's also a content mod for wiz8 on RPGcodex but I wouldn't use it the first time through

Dracons are unquestionably the best front-line damage dealers.
Gadgeteers are underpowered at the start, but become near essential by end-game. Check their Omnigun when they level up to see if they upgraded it and what ammo it can take.
Bishops are spread thin at the start, and are tricky to level properly, but become god kings of magic by end-game.
Consider making a priest then dual class him into a lord at level 2. Lords & Valkyries are generally better than priests anyway.
The two characters put in the back row aren't going to be able to melee anything up-front unless they have a polearm, so put your casters & ranged specialists in the back.
Make sure your casters have high magic resistance, or they're going to get nuked.
Don't get flanked, put your back against a wall if you have to.
Female characters are slightly stronger, since they can wear jewelry, but you need at least one male PC for a late-game quest.
If you tell an NPC with voice acting to fuck off they'll give you some unique dialogue.
Good luck with Nessie.

Cane of Corpus might be kind of an esoteric strat for first time players tho.'
