perhaps lower the difficulty, if there is a setting. i can't remember on the dc version.

In the DC version, food is the only way.
In the 64 version, you can buy it for 1000.

In Dark Legacy you can buy it for 50, and 100.

If you need food badly, just grind the first level in the Fire Mountains.

Replay the first level. It's the first one in mountain kingdom. It's pretty short and at high levels you can tear through it. At the end of a run, you get about 600hp and some items.

Isn't the point of gauntlet that you're steadily dying and need food (or credits in the arcade)?

Yep. I remember sinking 10 bucks into the arcade version of the OG Gauntlet when I was a kid, and just giving up after all my money was gone. It wasn't until years later that I discovered the game never ends.
