You guys should've told me about this sooner. I love Shinobi 3 but this feels so much better in every way. Different level design, more difficult but rewarding bosses. Overall, it just feels like the better game.
Revenge is GOAT.
Also Sega didn't develop III, which is why it's inferior.

There are many great games in the Shinobi series, and they're all different from one another
All the arcade, MD/Genesis, and GG games are good
I like III but it's basically unanimously agreed Revenge is the better game.
Revenge is the first game where I learned the name of the composer. The music's so good.

It's far from unanimous.
I just played this for the first time recently myself and I'm there with you OP. Also a blast on arcade stick.

Yuzo Koshiro was the first composer name many people learn because his name is right there on the title screen.
This game is great, I also like it more than III, but both are good.
Recently a bunch of friends were playing this on PS3 and they were dying on the first level, didn't even know how to use the techniques or anything. Then I casually grabbed the control and got through without getting hit, they were like woah dude. In fact this game is not too hard, I just played it a lot of times and have a sort of muscular memory to it, some stages still fuck me up though (fucking freeway)

>inferior = not Sega
My ass. As far as I'm concerned Sega took them under their wing and they became Sega and thus became accustomed to way they operate. Anybody can be "Sega".
they're both good
i don't like the later stages of the shinobi 3, too much platforming and level exploration, i prefer straightforward action, are other games different?
