Were the MD Sonic the Hedgehog games that special? I love Sonic and they're good games but I can't tell if they were particularly amazing platformers for their day or just popular ones. Many games copied them so it's hard to tell.

I don't know of any retro platformer with physics as smooth as the classic sonic games.

They are amazing,. They're elegantly simple, one button games where the variation in gameplay revolves around taking advantage of the robust physics system for a near infinite skill ceiling and new ways to play every time

They are what they are. Probably fine if a SMS is all you have(you poor soul), but the Genesis/MegaDrive ones are vastly superior.

There were a lot of garbage platformers. 2D platformers were the FPS' of their day. Everyone was making them but few were done well.

If you can name another platformer that has momentum based mechanics, instantaneous layer swapping, huge maps with alternate routes and paths, allows a character to exceed their top speed, and does it all with one button, then yeah...sure.
