Today is the 30th anniversary of Out Run's release, and I don't see a single post or news article regarding it.

Let's celebrate the legacy of the greatest driving game of all time

https://youtu.be/J7tZFW4WedI
>>
>>3510265
One of the best arcade games ever, and I only figured that out like 3 years ago.
>>
>>3510265
What makes it one of the greatest driving games of all time?
>>
My only gaming regret is that I wasn't around to experience Outrun in the arcades (I was like 2 years old in 86 and my parents hated video games)

But the Genesis port is great all the same
>>
>>3510289
I wish they had made a 32x version of it. I feel the arcade is the most difficult one, every hard track has a crazy snake turn with vehicle memorization.

Also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzsqx5uXmpA
>>
When it released to arcades it was like nothing ever seen before.

>At the end of each stage, before the end-of-stage goal is reached, players are presented with a fork in the road; a unique innovation that, for the first time in the history of racing games, gave players a choice of which route they wished to take through the game. Out Run's game-play was both tight and instinctive and, together with the superb stage design and wonderfully realized sprite-scaled graphics, would completely revolutionize not just racing games, but arcade games in general.

>Out Run is still regarded as perhaps the finest arcade racer (and certainly the finest sprite-driven racer) of all time. This was especially true of the deluxe cabinet version, which featured a fully hydraulic tilting cabinet (resembling a red Ferrari Testarossa) and a powerful speaker system situated directly behind the player's head. The sublime music still captivates many fans today

In addition, the more I played it the more I realized that the first zone is an amazingly subtle tutorial stage. In how it introduces each of the various turns and road variations in sequence before the end of the stage

We have to celebrate by making a custom track for Canon Ball

Why haven't you don't this already

Why have you failed the legacy of Out Run and disgraced us all
>>
>>3510265
>Today is the 30th anniversary of Out Run's release
Wait, really?

>>3510293
I wished there was a 32X port for years.
alas

on the other hand, the Genesis version isn't too terrible overall, even if far from perfect (has full-width roads unlike a bunch of ports, draws the road forks properly, handles pretty well, biggest issue is the lowish framerate and flicker)
the default difficulty settings are too easy though, possibly because the Genesis version may be limiting the amount of traffic on screen far more

Best way to play these days now (short of a cab) is either Cannonball or M2's 3DS version.

>>3510323
Nah.
It's got nice graphics, good music, and the handling and dodging and weaving is satisfying.
It's full of polish.

>>3510327
Last time I tried to use the track editor, the thing kept crashing on me.

Oh shit really
I just beat my first outrun route today on the 3ds release after years and years of trying on different versions
It's like poetry

Then it unlocked a "steering" mod and it just made the game piss easy
>>
With its superior sprite scaling, mode 7 effects, and color palette, I often fantasize how great Outrun would have looked on the SNES. Alas! Being a Sega game there was literally zero chance of it happening.

The music would probably have to suffer, though. Maybe it was for the best
>>
>>3510285
It's the worst. And the best. It's the only driving game.

That's no mode 7-like effect though, it would have been it the road was completely flat and you'd see the plane you're driving on rotate when turning. Outrun there are slopes and the ground don't rotate when turning.
Anyway, if you wanna know how outrun might have looked like on SNES, check the series Top gear.

>>
Love the series, the 3DS version is my personal favourite port of this one - looks and plays just brilliant.

>>3510297

>the finest sprite-driven racer

I would actually give that to Outrunners, by its own 80s standards the original looks great but Outrunners looks fucking insane, there's so much going on visually. I used to play it at the arcade and was bummed it never got any kind of port.
>>
>>3510780
Outrunner did have a megadrive port though.
>>
>>3510784

Oh yeah, that...I'd forgotten about it, now I remember why. It's a terrible port - forced split screen in all modes, bad control, underwhelming graphics. Fucking SEGA, couldn't wait literally one year for their 32-bit console to come out where they could do a 32-bit game justice.
>>
>>3510797
One year is an eternity in terms of the video game industry
>>
>>3510265
I liked rad mobile better
>>
>>3510797

Also the 'voice clips', if you can even call them that, are goddamn horrendous. Music holds up nicely though, so that's good at least.
>>
>>3510798

It is, but the Mega Drive already had three Out Run games released by that point, demand couldn't have been sky high, especially in 1994 when the console was barely hanging on. If they were adamant on getting it on there why not do a Sonic 3D Blast and do the port but put the 'real' version on the Saturn? All it got in the end was yet another port of the first game.
>>
I like how at almost 300km/h you're merely passing by Beetles
>>
>>3510817
Or really, any kind of home release. It seems like they completely gave up on the 2D games after the Saturn. And then made the jump to full 3D on the PS2, dropping all previous incarnations
>>
Turbo Out Run is also pretty cool.
>>
>>3511125
Best Outrun track.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig3gwqRBmnQ

Outrun 2006 is pretty awesome because it has the Turbo Outrun soundtrack in addition to the original game's.
>>
>>3511125

It sometimes gets some heat for being 'more racing than driving' but music is literally 10/10. Always pick the Turbo Outrun tracks in Outrun 2006.
>>
which is the best outrun?

is outrun 2006 good?
>>
>>3511807
If you want the most modern version, with the most gameplay, 2006 is the way to go (Xbox is the best version but is stupidly expensive)

If you want the best, most arcade perfect version, that's on the Saturn as a Japan import.
>>
>>3510319
No it didn't
>>
>>3510265
never could get warm with outrun and god knows i have tried, i like outrun II a lot though. Sega should make another game in the series. It is time...
>>
>>3512176
Have you played OutRunners? The driving style in that game is a little closer to OutRun 2, you might like it.
>>
>>3512178
Likely they haven't since if they didn't see it in the arcades the only other opportunity was the crappy Genesis port
>>
>>3510780
Man, OutRunners is probably the pinnacle of sprite scaling graphics games.
Amazing sense of style, completely wild and out there, brilliant soundtrack, pretty fine course design.

Had chills the first time I played it, what an amazing fucking game.

The Genesis port is such an embarrassment, but fucking nothing could match up to the System 32, particularly not the multi-screen variant used in OutRunners.
I just wish the port wasn't quite so lame.

It's an extremely cut-down version of 2SP with at least one stage replaced, all but one stage transition stripped out, and generally worse visual quality than on the original Xbox. They had very strict size limits on early XBLA releases. The online worked well at least.

Self sage for not /vr/
>>
>>3516150
Magical sound shower > Last Wave > Splash Wave > Passing Breeze
The only flaw of Last Wave is the fact it's way too short (well that's because it's the highscore music but still). Magical Sound Shower is THE Outrun music -- FM-synthesized jazz fusion, the thing that goes perfectly with driving at high speed on a coastal road with palmtrees and sunshine. Splash Wave is cool, but not too good either (the intro is great, but the rest of the song is kinda weak compared to it). Passing Breese is what you listen too much to the other songs (Last Wave excepted, it's too short to be listened to too many times).
>>
Will we get a new Outrun game in 2026?
>>
>>3516150
Passing Breeze > Last Wave > Magical Sound Shower = Splash Wave

Former is a really good mix of Naoya Matsuoka and Casiopea, among other J-pop/J-fusion influences, but it still sounds unique and timeless. MSS doesn't have as good a melody, but its build-up and salsa style's great. Splash Wave's just as good, probably the most recognizable OutRun tune after Last Wave.

I didn't play Outrun until this year.

Did you change into high gear?
That's the mistake I made when I first played. If you don't change into high gear, it is literally impossible to complete. So make sure you shift up.
>>
>>3518829
Yep, I shift, but I still can't make it to the fourth level.
>>
>>3518839
I still can't make it to the fourth level.
Oh, well in that case just play better.
When you said you can't get more than 30 seconds in, I thought you were saying you were literally timing out in 30 seconds. If you're just having trouble reaching a fourth level, then you need to work on your driving skills.
On the default difficulty, you can recover from one crash if you're good but a second crash will pretty much be death sentence.
If you don't want to decrease the difficulty, identify which levels you can do better and focus on that route. If you crash twice, you might as well restart if you don't feel bothered to record your scores.
An important trick to minimise crashes is make sure to down shift if it's a steep curve. Slowing down is a lot better than crashing.
It's just like any other driving game where you should be memorising the courses as much as possible, you've just got a lot less room for error. For example, I try to avoid the Alps as much as possible because I always fuck up there. Once you know which sections you are better at, you can plan your route to avoid the tricky sections.

This. It's only (if I remember correctly) an extra 5 seconds but it makes a world of difference. If it's on normal you better not crash even once of you want to complete the game in time.
>>
>>3518906
Does changing the traffic difficulty make a quantifiable difference?
>>
>>3520354
I honestly never changed the traffic from normal difficulty so I couldn't tell you. I could hardly get to the third stage with the timer on normal so I play on easy but the traffic is manageable yet challenging on normal. Plus it's so satisfying to navigate thru a ton of cars barely squeezing by and make it without crashing.
