Let's try this again: This thread is for YU-NO, EVE burst

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Let's try this again:
This thread is for YU-NO, EVE burst error, Desire and other games written by Hiroyuki Kanno (and optionally composed by Ryu Umemoto)

The aforementioned games are all available in English in some form or another, FYI.
>>
I have nothing against the thread, I mean the older threads were pretty fun, but there's oh so much we can talk about Yu-No before this inevitably turns in a Katawa Shojo circlejerk general.

What am I trying to say is, don't force it, we had our fun with the other threads, no need to start beating a dead horse.

Btw, has that retarded remake been released yet?
>>
>>3510197
It comes out in two months.
The best Yu-no threads are normally when somebody finished playing and brings fresh blood to the discussion.
>>
>>3510197
>>3510214
Honestly I made this thread hoping to talk about about more of the writer's games than just YU-NO.
>>
>>3510226
Yeah but english ports of Desire and EVE Burst Error are kinda crummy looking so I doubt much people played it. Gotta have that dithering magic man

What Japanese version would you recommend?
I have the Towns/9821 but you have to choose between text and speech and I prefer to have both.
>>
>>3510272
I wouldn't recommend any, I haven't played them as I don't know runes, so really I can't know. I haven't played the games specifically because I just want to play the dithered versions. But then again, choosing to opt out of the great Jap voice acting is also a dire choice. Any of the choices just seems to bring compromises.

Honestly it's a miracle we get to enjoy Yu-No's fan patch, it's a fucking miracle that adds everything that's great from all the different versions with no compromises. The only real criticism anyone can slap on the fan patch is the full screen mode which isn't that great (bilinear scale and letterboxed).

I guess I'm holding on to the remote chance that they might get a similar treatment someday, but honestly I doubt it.
>>
>>3510231
Honestly I find Desire's PC-98 art to be pretty atrocious. Almost every female character has a manface and some of the backgrounds look so dull and lifeless even for PC-98 standards
>>
>live in a house on the edge of the world
>there's this young girl who lives in the house next to me
>every single day, 4 AM sharp, she wakes up and walks to the cliff edge
>starts chanting "LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!" as loud as she can
>invariably wakes me and everyone else in the neighborhood up
>sometimes I'll scream for her to shut up, but nothing can stop her from chanting "LOOOOOVVVEEE!"
>maybe she wants a boyfriend? the boys won't go near her because they think she's crazy

This is how YU-NO goes, right?
>>
>>3510321
In fact the last part about the backgrounds seems to apply to C's ware games in general.
>>
>>3510329

I played them a long time ago.

Not really sure what to say about them though - 40% of Desire is really shit while the other half is OK while Eve... is a detective mystery? That's all I got.

>>

>>
>>3510659
Windows is probably what you need, particularly if you want to play in English.
The games were originally for the PC-9801 series and ported to the Saturn and potentially other systems.
Asenheim Project has Eve and Desire if that works for you.
http://tss.asenheim.org/

Yu-no is the most complicated, you need the Elf Classic compilation, the voice files, the sound files and the patches to added everything together.

They let you play with the voices and the PC-98 art at the same time.

Yeah that line-art looks definitely better.

What really bothers me about asenheim is no fullscreen, that white background, the distracting audio bar showing up and the persistent sidebar. I tried doing a userstyles for it once but I still can't manage to stretch the <canvas> to the screen size without fucking something up. I'm also not sure I can force nearest neighbor on the <canvas> tag.

I love ansenheim but really it kind of defeats its own purpose by not giving a proper presentation. It's kind of annoying playing a game in this sort of environment.

Well I tried it again and I kind of got scaling the canvas to work and nearest neighbor, but I don't think it's even possible to find a solution to scale the text area since it's not actually just pixels but a html div with different properties and layouts.

I guess it's better to just rely on browser zoom. I'll just work on a script that relies on browser zoom and focus on just cleaning the environment around it, the sidebar, the background and the audiobar.

I know there's a way to add options to userstyles so people can turn off/on parameters, that way if you don't like the scanlines or the noise or whatever you can opt out. I'll check it out later.

I'll probably forward this to asenheim's webmaster when I'm done with it, maybe he'll want to implement it in the site.

>>
>>3515631

>>
>>3515640
The point of using the PC CRT is to not have to use upscaling, and play the games at their native resolution, so I rather not do that.

>>3515645
Look I'm not saying you shouldn't use the PC ports, it's your preference and your choice. But you can just set the OS resolution to whatever resolution you want to match the native resolution of the game and then just go fullscreen in the browser.

Well I can tell you where the thing is located at least, weirdly enough it's not being preloaded as an image like most cached objects are, but instead drawn on a <canvas>. Besides, even if you actually managed to get down to the nitty gritty and replace the image, there's the less technical but more obvious aspect that both UIs are not the same size, shit wouldn't fit. For those who like the music, there's a decent sound emulator for the PC98 called Hoot. You can download the music for PC98 games from the Hoot Archive:

http://snesmusic.org/hoot/v2/?system=PC-98&order=ppl&page=46

That page has the files for YU-NO, Desire and EVE. Takes a little bit to get working, but you can play comfy PC98 music on repeat once you do.
>>
>>3519040
Or you can just emulate it with foobar2000. There's a ton of plugins for game music. The PC-98 plugin is called S98 input. Although I think the general music plugin "Game Emu Player" which plays a lot of system also supports PC-98 now, not sure.

If you like the Saturn OST there's also a plugin for it called SSF/DSF Decoder.
>>
Man, Desire's OST is turning out not to be even remotely as good as Yu-No's. He really did evolve as a musician.

Man, I get the feeling a LOT of PC-98 assets are missing from asenheim's Desire "port" and they focused completely on the Windows version instead, with the option to change to PC-98 graphics and music just an afterthought.

I just googled the intro and not only did they not kept something as simple as the intro music but also a lot of animations are missing.

One has to be thankful for their efforts, but goddamn this is such a butchered port. The dialogue is pretty hysterical at times, but really makes me wonder if they're taking too much creative liberties (whoever translated it, aisenheim or the windows folks)

I mean, considering the fuckload amount of ports they have up there, one has to imagine they just broadbrushed through all of them. Really how can someone be that precise and that prolific at the same time, you can't shit out all those games without ignoring a ton of details.

Again I'm thankful for asenheim and their efforts, but I really wish someone told me beforehand these ports aren't that great.

I'm going to bite the bullet and learn moonrunes someday.

The game was translated by the US branch of Himeya, C's Ware's parent company.

Was it ever revealed who was making the phone calls in YU-NO?
>>

Then who was phone???

There's speculation but no hard answers for that question AFAIK

Toyotomi, maybe? Also, speaking of theories.
I have a theory that the "she" in Ryuuzouji's memorandum is actually Kaytia, Kouda's wife, and that she was possessed by the being that later possessed Ryuuzouji.

Now the reason I think this is because first of all: Ryuuzouji mentioned in his memorandum that this "she" had a very vast knowledge of dimension travel and other such subjects. Now in the ending, Yuuno says that after she came into contact with Grantia's consciousness she was more or less bestowed with her wisdom. Therefore, it's safe to assume that all priestesses - including Kaytia - have an intimate knowledge of event science and dimension travel, as they all have to serve as a vessel for her consciousness..

As for the second reason, I need only quote her final words: "I am not myself. I must set off on a journey for the sake of the next in line... farewell." Now there's multiple ways to interpret this but my personal interpenetration is that this is Fake Ryuuzouji's way of saying that she has no use for Kaytia anymore and that he's ready to move on to his next target. Namely, Ryuuzouji.

What do you guys think?
>>
Also, another thing.
Fake Ryuuzouji explicitly states that he has his host's memories in addition to his own. So possessing Kaitya grants him access to all of the knowledge given to her by Grantia.

Shit I don't remember any of those names
>>
>>3528456
Koudai = Takuya (The Protagonist)'s dad
Kaytia= Koudai's wife and Takuya's biological mom. Koudai gave her the name "Keiko" and then married her.
Ryuuzouji= The school headmaster and the game's main villain.

I want to play Eve burst error for the first time ,I found a site that lets me play it in the browser ,should I play it with Windows sound/graphics or pc98 for maximum comfiness?

PC-98

If you're going with the Windows graphics you're better off downloading the windows port since the asenheim games aren't 100% accurate.

If you're talking about asenheim feel free to use this script I just made: >>3515243

May Kanno and Umemoto rest in peace. :(
I only played Yu-No, which is my favourite game and VN of all time. I've still yet to play their other projects which I really should.

I will probably have to make time to play them.

That's very interesting. I wish Kanno was still alive to answer some of these Q&A's. Hopefully some of the team behind the remake (which doesn't look as great as the dithered artstyle) know some of the answers.
