Why did it end up being such a mess in the first place? Most of the time what the characters say doesn't even make sense.

It was a real trip. You mostly know where to go and what to do, and the gameplay is simplistic, but the story is like...wut. They might as well had released it with Japanese text.
Simon's Quest and Final Fantasy Tactics come to mind. There's romhacks for both, of course, but it's hard to believe they were playtested in English at all.

FFT got a better translation with the PSP version, though I guess it comes down to your ability to take in that old timey english they went with, still it was better and algus was even more biting in that game

Yeah, I prefer the PSP version too, the old timey English never bothered me but I could see why people would take issue with it - just being able to understand what the fuck was even going on was a big plus.

Even in Japanese the script is kind of unusual and doesn't do a lot of explaining about what's going on, you're just pulled along on this wild train ride
