What games "broke the [genre] mold" and were punished for it by being forgotten and players hating said innovations?
People don't hate Galerians any more than say Koudelka, Parasite Eve, D or Illbleed. Resident Evil was just such a breakaway hit and effective use of that gen's processing resources it's obvious why everyone would use similar engines.

Parasite Eve was a success though
Never played this game. What's it about?

So was Galerians?

Angsty kids that explode as nukes.

It's like Akira with fetch quests

Not AFAIK. Then again somehow it did get a sequel
Alien Resurrection on PS1 was a very early adopter (maybe the first?) of what is now the typical FPS control scheme for controllers but was panned for it at the time.

Yeah I think I remember games that used that control style weirding reviewers out. But then I don't think I've ever played a FPS that was entirely comfortable on console no matter what the controls.
>>3501009
I like the first Galerians, but the sequel was hot garbage.
>>3501052
What did they screw up?
>>3502018
Made it more of a straightforward action game, and totally removed the whole resource management aspect, causing anything resembling tension to disappear along with it.
I'm beating my dick

It also got a shitty anime
