I am looking to get into the Sega Master System. The Wii's Virtual Console offers a chance for me to get my feet wet, however, it only has a small selection of games for the console (only 15 titles).
Here are the titles offered:
- Alex Kidd in Miracle World
- Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars
- Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
- Enduro Racer
- Fantasy Zone
- Fantasy Zone II
- Phantasy Star
- Secret Command
- Space Harrier
- Sonic the Hedgehog

- Wonder Boy

I played the Sonic Master System games via the Game Gear. Sonic 1 was okay, same with Sonic Chaos. Sonic 2 was very hard from what I remember. They were not memorable, Sonic 1 might be the best of the three I played.

How does Phantasy Star compare? It seems like it was a technical marvel at the time, and probably the most impressive JRPG of the 1980's.
While it is still the most impressive Master System game graphically, is it even worth it to play? I heard mixed things on it (some saying its one of the few standouts on the Master System's library, while others say it has aged very poorly).

Playing it now. Do you like old JRPGs? So far it's better than at least the first two FF and DQ games (all four of which I like quite a bit). It's really impressive how fully formed an experience it is and how good an impression of what's to come it is. Way more changes between DQI and II. and FFI and II than PSI and II. I mean that in a good way.
That being said it's an old ass RPG with first person dungeons and it isn't interested in holding your hand. You'll either have to make your own maps or look them up. It's not an easy game, and longer than some of its contemporaries, but a really good experience overall.

Kenseiden, Alien Syndrome, and Double Dragon are some I haven't seen listed. You probably want to try them out on computer before you buy though.
