How about a retro SMT thread?

I bought a PS1 copy of If... a few days ago. I wanted to pick up a copy of PS1 SMT2 but that shit is really expensive for some reason.

Has their been a full translation of If... yet?

I really like the atmosphere of If...and the first two Personas. Persona 3 and 4 are great games as well and I really like them, but I prefer the darker and strange themes of their predecessors.

I feel the same way mostly. The SNES SMT games easily have the best atmosphere out of the whole series.

Persona 1 and 2 are also nice. Too bad they play like SHIT. It's a real shame in the case of P2. The story and characters are so interesting but I can barely get myself to play the games because of how fucking annoying the battle system is. I made myself replay the PSP version of Innocent Sin and wanted to die by the time I finished it, and afterwards I got about 8 hours into EP before I just couldn't take it anymore.

Persona 5 looks pretty great. It and SMT4 Final are the only games I'm actually looking forward to.
>>
>>3490670
>I really like the atmosphere of If..
Same here, but I could never get into the Persona series for whatever reason.

Somewhere I have sitting around a bonus item that came with the PSX (I think) version of If..., it's a little school notebook with stickers, the school rules, calendar, a pen, and some other junk like that. Maybe one of my favorite pieces of weird game merch I have.

I feel you, bro. I still give some credit to the PSP remakes and their improvements but yeah, these games aren't for everyone.

After a lot of frustration, I got used with P1 but P2's labyrinths, high encounter rate and revamped Persona creation system still drives me crazy.

>Persona 5 looks pretty great. It and SMT4 Final are the only games I'm actually looking forward to.
Me too. Never played the first IV but it's on my "to buy" list with Final.

That's the 50th Anniversary Pack. Man, that notebook with the school emblem looks pretty cool.

First IV is bad, it feels like Atlus's B team was making it. However, considering how much Persona switched from sidelines to the focus of the SMT universe it was obvious.

Man, I want to like P1 and 2 but the games are tedious, especially the negotiating system.

Never played a SMT game before. Is Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei for SNES a good starting point?

I've been playing some of the first SMT on my Super Famicom. I got pretty far and then lost motivation to play. Might consider playing it again on the PS1 or something

The concept and story are cool as fuck but I'm not the biggest dungeon crawler fan, plus besides the actual battles the dungeons so far were pretty bare bones and annoying to navigate.

Only other SMT I played was Strange Journey which I also didn't beat. (Quit after finishing Eridanus, fuck Eridanus).

I think Strange Journey is a bit overrated honestly. Halfway through the game all of the dungeons stop being challenging and just become downright tedious.

It's reputation really comes from being the closest thing to the original SMTs in a sea of Persona spin offs.
About half way through it now, and I see what you mean. But I'd still say it's one of the better RPGs on the DS for someone who doesn't want a walk in the park.
>>
>>3491307
>Man, I want to like P1 and 2 but the games are tedious, especially the negotiating system.

P1 isn't that bad, it is just another way of fighting but with better rewards if you can remember key things.

P2's card fusion is a living nightmare though
>>
>>3490534

I played a few hours of the snes remake of Megami Tensei, then I stopped when I realized how it was just a bare bones dungeon crawler where i was seeing numbers move around and listening to the same music for 4 hours.
>>
>>3492903
Are there any pre-PS2 SMT games that aren't hard to get into? Soul Hackers?
>>
>>3490670
>but I prefer the darker and strange themes of their predecessors.
Curious what you find light and friendly about Persona 3, the game is very "dark". I can understand feeling that way about 4 (I feel the same way), but 3 felt like a natural extension of the previous games. It pains me that we'll never get the series back from the clutches of shitty waifu simulator 4.

To keep this thread retro- would there be any interest in a translation of SMT for Sega CD? I never actually looked into if there were any advantages to it, but one week last year I got bored and extracted/decompressed the script. Seeing all of this If... art has sorta made me want to start working on it again.
>>
>>3492937
would be pretty hard to do considering it has voice acting

you'd have to find a way to subtitle the opening somehow, or even find the original music track and make a dub or something

Any reason why you picked the Mega CD version over the PS1 version? All the PS1 SMT ports have fully polygonal dungeons and run at 60FPS for smoother scrolling and junk. I don't know much about the Mega CD port of SMT1, though, so.

I don't know why anyone hasn't tried translating the PS1 release of If... either. The SNES translation is never gonna get finished and the PS1 version is better anyways.
>>
>>3492904
Soul Hackers is easy to get into, especially with the 3DS port of it. All the new features can be turned off if you so choose.
>>
I finished Kyuuyaku and was going to go through the rest but now I think I'll go back to FC Megaten I/II after playing early Murrican RPGs
>>
>>3492991

Soul Hackers on 3DS with the attack animations off and the speed on top is probably the fastest 1st person dungeon crawler ever. Also you can hold down Y to run, even faster.
>>
>>3493012
FC Megaten I is pretty bad.
>>
>playing kmt
>run into enemy that has a level down attack and no elemental weakness

>>
>>3491835
I like that halfway through it, the entire tone of the story shifts from a sci-fi research expedition with everyone mostly keeping themselves together to a hopeless trek through more hell when the crew realizes there's powers far stronger than them at war here, and they're just caught in the middle. A large portion of your crew just breaks down and starts worshiping the old gods or submitting to the angels after abandoning their duty.

Gameplay-wise though, the last half of the game sees you do a lot of backtracking, which I was more disappointed with compared to the couple of hard dungeons still left. Sector E's teleporter maze was difficult enough to keep track of that I actually had to draw a map for it, and sector H took me a good chunk of time to navigate through it all until my party got a bit better rounded.

Fuck that secret dungeon though, that shit was maddening. It's so long and involves constant guessing to discover what route you need to take, and then the boss just one shots my entire level 90 party anyway.
>>
>>3492896
Pretty much my thoughts with P1 and P2. I breezed through P1 once I realized how strong attack magic was at killing entire enemy groups. P2 I'm still frustrated with because of the slower pacing in battle coupled with the card fusion.

>"Hey, this guy we don't know is asking us for all sorts of shit and wants us to backtrack to places we've already been before."
>"Well, we better listen to him lel."
Fucking why? And then you get infuriating warp puzzles with poison tiles shortly after. I like dungeon crawlers, and I'm not afraid of a challenge, but god damn Strange Journey just gets so bothersome around the 30 hour mark.

IIRC, it was for a trade for his scanning app. Jack's entire purpose there was to gather forma to sell back on earth.

I wonder if Jack would've actually betrayed you had it not been for Jim fucking things up. He seemed reasonable enough that he could've been a big benefit against Mem Aleph and co. had he been given a reason to help you out.

Soul Hackers is my favorite game in the series. The negotiation system is so fun there, and it's the atmosphere deliciously cyberpunk. Not to mention the combat is the closest a dungeon crawler has gotten to FAST. If it were far more difficult all-around combat and layout-wise I'd give it my nomination for a perfect Megaten game.
>>
>>3498180
I thought they could've done more with the atmosphere. It felt about 90% SMT and 10% cyberpunk.

I think they should've played up the interconnection of the city and the internet. The current setup felt more like a plausible future for the next decade rather than something really futuristic.

I own a physical copy of it, it was an exercise I gave myself to learn more about romhacking. Never figured I'd actually do more than extract the script.

I can look into the PS1 remake, can't say I'd be thrilled to do the translation itself (I could muddle through it, four years of Japanese in Uni). Also what do you mean about the SNES translation never getting finished? It's been done since 2002 - http://www.romhacking.net/translations/571/

Think the game was released in 1997, it was before the matrix was released (although a year after GITS movie)
