They're all decent but never great. Some people like the later ones better, other ones say that's the best. I think they're all about the same. Worth playing through once at least.

I got stuck too many times until I just stopped playing, just like with Ocarina of Time. I expected better.

Both this and Risky are OK but not great. I'd say the OG is better due to how much it raped the hardware. Pirate's Curse (the newest one) is actually really good.

It's a nice-looking game for a GBC game, but the controls are clunky as hell, transformations take too long and it doesn't help that you have to swap between forms pretty frequently.

Risky's Revenge fixed all this and streamlined the transformation process, but the game itself is too short and feels like a demo. Pirate's Curse is much better and feels like a complete game, so give that one a try.

I've completed and enjoyed Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse, but I have yet to finish the OG Shantae. The controls are so clunky that it kills most of my enjoyment. I made it a fair way into the game before I just kinda lost interest.

Pretty excited for Half Genie Hero.

Shantae does have beautiful spritework and the uncommon female protagonist, but the gameplay itself is just average. I'm convinced it only gets the attention that it does because it's so rare and expensive. I'm certain that had this game been released just a year or two earlier it wouldn't have close to the following that it does today.

I played the entire existing Shantae trilogy for the very first time last fall, and really enjoyed them.

First game's definitely oldschool Nintendo-hard at best, but nothing impossible really. The start with the weak stats and lack of moves is the toughest part.

So the rest of the moves are worth getting?

I stopped buying them after I got the fruity spin kick ability that leaves you super vulnerable during the cool-down time. They were expensive so I wasn't going to bother. I'm already on Mount Pointy or whatever it's called which I'm assuming is near the end of the game.

Outside of the health potions I haven't found a use for most of the items I tried out.

I had fun with it but the latter games are way more fun.
The hitboxes on most of Shantae's regular attacks are so tiny that I just spammed fireballs and spikeballs most of the time.

Never played the games, but I do like the artwork.

Gameplay and level design wise the newer games are far ahead of the first. Especially Pirate's Curse.

They'd be run of the mill average games that would be barely enough to keep Wayforward going. In fact they wouldn't even be that, since their game design is shit and only got half decent by Pirate's Curse. But there are tons of games like that anyway.

It's the cute main heroine and the awesome sprite animation that got the game going.
Then the lewds.
HGH will be a new start for the series since they'll finally use vector animation, so they can reboot the great graphics and make it have incredible animation again. And hopefully get a great game (not a mediocre metroidvania for children).

I mean I like the great art and the humorous story, but Shantae was always something that I play once only then never again.

Nah, that's bullshit. The first game is solid and has great visuals, the third game is really good overall. It's only Risky's Revenge that falls really flat.

Hell, I got into WayForward through Mighty Milky Way and there's hardly any lewd in that game at all. They're good at designing puzzles and wonderful at sprite work

I got the same feeling. It happened to me, that I played the games in reverse order. I really liked Pirates Curse, Risky's Revenge was good, but I just don't seem to get the hang for the original. Maybe I'm spoiled, I dunno.
