Is there anything more visually appealing than PC-98 graphics?

PC-88 graphics. Amazing what 8 out of 8 colors can achieve.

>>3479163
Nearly nothing on the PC98 is translated.
It shouldn't be surprising since it's almost exclusive to Japan and has a rich library of text heavy games.

How about you start playing games in Japanese to see how much progress you made?
>>3479191
I've actually played through a whole (short) game though I had to rely on a dictionary. I can't remember the words at all.
tfw just made plans to go see a Japanese tutor to help me with my Japanese studies
>>3479195
Of course you have to use a dictionary.
There will always be words you don't know yet with any language and in Japanese you have the extra obstacle of how to read/write words so just guessing the meaning from context won't teach the proper vocabulary.
English has similar issues where you see a new word and you don't know how its pronounced or you hear a new word and don't know how its written.
Finishing a game is a decent feat, just keep going and you get used to it.

Things without graphical artifacts that you couldn't even see if you played on a screen they were actually meant for?

NEC has always been one of the best monitor producers.
>>3480963
>graphical artifacts that you couldn't even see if you played on a screen they were actually meant for?
Except you CAN see these on NEC's or even some lower quality computer monitors (on cost-reduced models of amiga monitors like the 1085s you can still see dithering patterns from a 640x200 picture, even though the dot pitch is of 0.52mm, compared to the 0.39mm dotpitch of your late 80s PC-98 monitor). The "dithering was meant to be extrapolated a noisy video signal" meme need to die, expecially when such technique was used on arcade games and computers with high-quality RGB monitors.

My guess is that anon put "dat ass" into a machine translator.
oshiri ga sai suki sounds wrong.
おしりの大好き (oshiri no daisuki) would be "I like ass"
おしりがすごい (oshiri ga sugoi) is close to "dat ass" (Amazing ass).
Or you could just go full Shibuya-style waseieigo and say ダットアッス! (datto assu!/dat ass!)

Not that anon but Japanese is essentially completely useless unless you want to either move to Japan or play/watch untranslated games/anime. In the former case you're probably a weeb. In the latter case you're definitely a weeb and most likely a weirdo.
No other country but Japan speaks Japanese. Japanese is one of the hardest languages in the world for a native English speaker to learn. English is fairly widely known in Japan. And there's really not many reasons I can think of to go to Japan other than being a weeb.

Guess that all these non-anglo learning english to watch american series instead of waiting for them to be translated or just to understand song lyrics are weirdo now.
Also, you seems to have a hard time understanding what a weeb is.
>>3483162
English is essentially completely useless unless you want to either move to England or the United States (and who in their right mind would?) or play/watch untranslated games/movies. Of course unlike Japanese English literature is not a thing, unless you're into faggy poetry, which the Japanese do better anyway. In the former case you're probably a retard. In the latter case you definitely have shit taste and most likely a normalfag.
No other notable country but the UK, US and Canada, speak English. If you're going to Canada then you should just learn French, at least you can gain access to real culture. English is one of the easiest languages in the world for anyone to learn. Japanese is fairly widely known in Japan. And there's really not many reasons I can think of to leave Japan other than being retarded.
>>3483162
>No other country but Japan speaks Japanese.
Palau. And there are Nikkeijin around the world.
>play/watch untranslated games/anime.
Or you are not satisfied with translations and want to experience things in their original language. There's also things aside from anime and games in Japanese.
>>3483208

Hey if you want to spend 2+ years learning Japanese to experience some piece of Japanese media in its original language, go right ahead. It's your life, your decision. Don't let me stop you. I'm just saying it isn't useful for anything but that.

PC Engine thread? Okay I kind of have a request, if anyone is willing to help. I honestly don't know where to look.
I've been looking for this Japanese game where your main character basically wears a lizard suit, like a super hero.
>>3483382
Have anyone of you encountered such a game while playing untranslated PC Engine games? To be honest, I'm not sure if it was on PC Engine. I just remember playing it on PC back in 1995, but it could have been emulated.
Maybe it was an original PC Doujin title, I honestly have no idea.
>>3483380
>The difference is, English is actually widely spoken
Yes and? Japanese can be learned for other reasons than what you said in your previous post, yet you chosen to criticize it because some people learn it so they can consume Japanese medias, while people do the exact same thing with english.
>and useful IRL.
Every language is useful IRL if you wanna communicate, trade and work with the population that uses it. Hell, even dead languages like latin are useful IRL.
>>3483395
Here you go buddy, have a Noriko.
>>3483412
No, not PC Engine.
>>3483420
Oh ok. Do you think it might have been a PC doujin title?
I don't even know how the genre I'm looking for is called.
Yu Yu Hakusho's Japanese video game page doesn't seem to have a specific way to describe it.
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%B9%BD%E2%98%86%E9%81%8A%E2%98%86%E7%99%BD%E6%9B%B8_(%E3%82%B9%E3%83%BC%E3%83%91%E3%83%BC%E3%83%95%E3%82%A1%E3%83%9F%E3%82%B3%E3%83%B3)
If you're already an English speaker and wanted to learn another language gauged on how "useful" it is, your only real options would be Chinese or Spanish.
I dunno about you, but Japanese is far more appealing to me than those languages. Not only is Japanese the prevailing language among my hobbies, it is also much more interesting and pleasing to read and speak than either Chinese or Spanish. There are 120 million native Japanese; if you're so concerned with things like using the language for financial stability, there's no short supply of translation jobs or other professions that might need someone fluent in the language.
>>3483420
I wish there was more to that game. I really do.
>>3483380
You can't read old texts with modern Japanese. It might actually be more practical to learn traditional Chinese for that since it is practically Chinese writing and appropriately named 漢文(Kanbun) in Japanese.
>>3483460
That it would be. I'd kill for some more fan service too. Granted I don't know if Gainax still holds the rights, which I would imagine they do. I'd pay good money for another, even if it wasn't localized.
Does anyone actually own any Japanese microcomputers? I've been looking online but they are expensive as hell. It seems like you have to import directly from Japan.
>>3483471
I'd love to buy a PC-98 or an MSX2 or something, but yeah, they're massively expensive on ebay. I haven't checked yahoo.auctions.jp so I dunno what they go for there.
>>3483471
The only way to get Japanese microcomputers for cheap in the west is to live in europe and try to get an MSX computer from a Dutch, French, Spanish or Italian owner. It might be a philips model (thus not technically Japanese) but still runs the same games.
>>3483483
You can find an MSX2 on the cheap sometimes on ebay if you check often enough
>>3483470

I've never played PC-98, am I missing much?
>>3487563
Japanese knowledge presumably.
>>3487563
A lot of the library is fairly primitive-feeling, even compared to console or other PC games of the late 80s, but even so there are a ton of games and lots of really standout ones, particularly in genres like RPG, VN/Adventure, and Simulation/Strategy (also, notably, genres that generally require some level of Japanese knowledge to get the most out of). And like this thread was made to point out, there is a lot of impressive anime-aesthetic pixel art.
It's hard to over-stress how important the PC-98 was as a platform in the history of Japanese computing and gaming, if you care at all about where all the stuff we have today comes from, you can't really ignore the role it played. But if your attitude is more, "I just want some good games to play bro I don't care about the rest of that shit," then you aren't missing anything.
>>3487572
Any where to read up on this history in English?
>>3487572
I think the PC-88 was more important. A lot of people and studios started out with it in the 80s. PC-98 was more a 90s thing when other structures had become established.
PC-98 also gets at least some acknowledgement outside of Japan while most accolades of the PC-88 are wrongly attributed to the MSX or other platforms.

PC98 art tends to have the lineart drawn first with a pixel brush, or whatever the '80s equivalent was called. You can't get that same effect automatically, the best you can do is go over the lines with a pixel brush until they look coarse like the art ITT.
>>3487274

This. It's just ordered dithering - the most basic kind. Floyd-Steinberg gets a bit mushy, especially producing horizontal groupings, but also works well.
Fancy pixel art is dithered by hand, following contours, or using a less regular layout like Stucki.
However, it definitely looks like they were doing it the automatic way on the PC-98.

I'm guessing about 50% of the dithering ITT was hand drawn. A few stand out as suspiciously automatic looking though. Ordered (Bayer) dithering has been around since the early 70s so it's very possible.
It's also entirely possible the dithering was automatic but they went over it manually and fixed anything that looked awkward.

I agree I never played any PC 98 games but the graphics look great especially Policenauts. But i don't know any moons so that leaves me out of over 80% of the system's library.

This one >>3491170 - "every bureaucrat", "school is closer to life", "what hinders perestroika". There is also something after bureaucrat, but makes no sense to me.
And this one >>3489921 - "COME, SON".

There's a guy on Patreon translating PC-98 games but other than that, there's a few games out there that got PC ports and were translated that way like YU-NO and even shit like True Love

>but desu, this is not bad. But the original is just as good really.
It's pretty alright for a simple update of the track. I would have liked if they actually did rearrange it a bit like Umemoto did for the Saturn port of Desire
For example:

Because these games are all from the mid 90s when pencil thin Sailor Moon looking bodies were in.
Worse Saturn butchering in my opinion is Steam Hearts. While the music is certainly better on the PC-98, its actually a moot point because you can barely even hear the music on the Saturn over the SFX and annoying voice clips. And no, of course there are no volume options.

It is, though.
Not only was the SS OST of YU-NO not done by Umemoto himself, it wasn't converted to it with Umemoto's custom sound engine in mind, so the tempo gets all sorts of fucked up in some tracks:

SS: https://a.pomf.cat/omraze.ogg

My post was actually in favor of the Saturn OST of Desire, FYI.

I was looking at this, but I can't give money to someone who uses the term "waifu" in the memetic sense like a drooling normalfag.

Does anyone have experience with running CD games in NP21NT?
I got a bunch of FM Towns/PC-9821 dual use CD-ROM images and try to load them in the CD enabled build of NP2 as IDE #2 but it doesn't seem to recognize them no matter which filetype (cue, ccd, img etc) I pick.
