Looking to have a thread about JP only /vr/ releases. Are you currently playing, or want to play something that was never brought outside of Japan? What games are worth playing? Discuss systems, translation patches, series, etc.

Posting the obligatory "Japanese Twin Peaks: The Video Game".

I've been playing the Super Robot Wars series for several years, now. I only own a handful of physical copies as far as retro SRW games go (Alpha, Alpha Gaiden, 64, and Link Battler), but I probably own about 90% of the SRW games released from 2000 onward.
>>
Passed N1 this July, so I don't really view any video games as a possible problem.

I want to play Gunparade March, when I have time, cause people often talk positively about it.

Seems you are not very confident in your skills either if the mere suggestion that you are not as good as you are throws you into a fit. Or do you think spouting the last bad word you learned is funny? You must be from DJT.

NEC PC98 is the best system for retro RPGs.

Huh. Who'dve thought.
>>
>>3474048
For RPGs? That's normally NEC territory, MSX normally got ports or parallel releases that tend to be worse due to the lower resolution.
Maybe a few non-Falcom action RPGs.
>>
>>3474072
When you really think about it, NEC PC territory = graphic text adventures which thrived at 640x200 resolutions on the PC-88, then continuing to a doubled color count at 640x400 on PC-98. The MSX2 has a bunch of great games in that genre but not anywhere near as many, and relatively few exclusives there also. Wargames also did best on NEC machines because of the resolution advantage, leading to brand recognition in that community.

>>
>>3474106
>How do I stop looking at words as a bunch of syllables bundled together and start seeing them as individual words?
By reading more and familiarizing yourself more with words you know.

>Also, how to proper study kanji?
By studying vocabulary and seeing how kanji works in it.
>>
>>3474112
So, basically, study vocabulary.
I haven't found a proper way to do that yet.

I took the stupid decision of focusing on listening/talking. The result is that I translated several Downtown's shows with all the kansaiben nonsense, but whenever kanji appeared on screen, it made me want to kill myself.

Man, Patreon was a mistake.
>>
>>3474114

You using Anki at all? The best thing is to download some vocabulary decks and just grind it out. The Rembering The Kanji deck sounds like it'd be useful too as it starts you off with the easiest kanji and just keeps going until you consistently get it.

>>
>>3474121
I'll look into that. Thanks for the advice man.
>>
>>3474124
The bigger problem are the statements about your proficiency.
>>
>>3474121
I wouldn't spend too much time on prefabricated vocabulary decks. You end up with lots of unimportant words you have no attachment to. Instead concentrate on whatever unfamiliar words you personally encounter. You'll learn the important common words either way.
>>
>>3474101
I've seen it before. Many have other platforms or ways to ask for "donations".
>>
>>3474139
I think I can read and speak Japanese decently well. I'm not translating games I can't understand, here.
>>
>>3474145
Donations is one thing, monthly payments with goals and even tiers are not the same thing.
>>
>>3474149
There's "understand" and understand.

If you manage to release something, it's gonna be fun to point out mistakes.
>>
>>3474160
Why even bother having this sort of attitude?

Honestly, the guy being critical in the link yo reddit comes off as just, I don't know, jealous? Maybe that's the wrong word, maybe petty would be better?
>>
>>3474165
Because I seen enough similar cases (from Fuwanovel) to know how it'll end.

Then again it's true that older games tend to be more simplistic, so we'll see.

And no, having standards is never petty. Especially not when someone wants you money to live in Japan. You shouldn't be happy to enjoy shit just because someone serves it to you.
>>
>>3474165
Jealous of what, some guy asking for handouts?
>>
>>3474169
It's not about standards, the only tangible compliant so far is unsubstantiated and based on extrapolation.

Fan translators often charge money. That's not the problem.

>>3474171
Presumably. Like I said, petty is a better word.

By all means, be upset if there's ever actually proof of anything.

I hate that we live in age where translating has got to this point, I miss when it was just a fun way to practice a second language and some coding. Most of the patches released in the era of these games came out to no fanfare whatsoever, that was just how it went. Charging money puts quality control to the forefront as well, imagine if that Oasis SD Snatcher patch from 1990 came out today and you paid money for it.
>>
>>3474181
Hey, I noticed a mistake in your English. "Funner" isn't actually a word. Maybe you should brush up a little. Hey, at least you aren't asking for money, though, right?

Would you rather have a translation of the game with typos to point out or no translation at all?
>>
I'm game. Most games I'm playing nowadays are imports.

If any of you are looking for something fun to play on the GBC, I really recommend the Medarot series. 1 is decent but it's better on the Wonderswan. 2-4 are godtier and 5 has some highlights and could have been awesome if it wasn't half-baked.

What else you guys playing?

Understanding a language and translating from it are two different things. Obviously you need to understand a language to translate from it but you need a lot more in order to translate. Learning to translate also doesn't help with learning the language.

I can understand Japanese well enough but I wouldn't want to translate anything beyond a few sentences. I wouldn't even want to translate German even though I've used it for decades.

Yeah, newer games tend to have maps or markers that could lead you into your next destination.

Sure you could brute force games like Princess Crown too. You won't enjoy it as much but it's doable to just walk around till you find the next event.

For playing PC98 games, can I emulate them? Would I be able to play them on CRT and recreate those glorious high pixel looks?
>>
>>3474318
That kind of thinking is wrong, man. You also use it for games that are already translated and you want to play, and games you already played and want to experience again.

>>3474327
Depends on how you're emulating. Neko Project 2 has a Retroarch core I think.
>>
>>3474327

>>
>>3474318
There's more to Japanese than just untranslated games. You're no longer restricted to shoddy fan translations or stupid localization and can play any port you want.
There's also a lot of extra material to games that rarely gets translated.
>>
>>3474329
Why is Anex still so popular? The emulation is shit and the interface is shit. The only point seems to be that you can play it on a Pentium 1.

>>3474056
Not to be a total advocate, but I don't think the guy raises any red flags. His English is fine and his translations from the demo shots seem adequate enough. I took Japanese in high school and had kana down back in middle school, but I reopened myself to Japanese in college beyond the average song lyrics post through game translation.

Admittantly, my first translations were horrible, but in the couple years Ive been doing it while simultaneously picking up reps and reading books, I think it's a fair enough way to start. He's eager to learn and that's probably the most important part. If he has inaccurate translations and then hops on the defensive and lashes back at people, obviously my opinion is going to change later, but for now the only thing I think is weird is the patreon. It rubs me the wrong way in the same vein as drawing fanart on a patreon is fucked up too.

There's nothing wrong with donations, those are like saying thanks to the creator for the wwork they're doing or have done.

It's the Patreon/Kickstarter system of funding a project where things get shaky. It can work but half-assed proposals are dime a dozen. Like the case mentioned ITT.

This seems to be the most appropriate thread to ask this question without derailing, unless you can direct me elsewhere.

I'm looking to buy Japanese only games such as >>3473938 on ebay, which seem pretty cheap, which is fine I'm mostly interested in collecting, soon learning the language as I'll be moved to Japan for work. The question is, are all those Ebay sellers from Japan with rare games only displaying stock photos actually legit? Take this link for example:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/DeSPIRIA-JAPAN-T-14402M-DreamCast-/252149499000?hash=item3ab5480478:g:bNoAAOSwo0JWM~ig

Anyone have experience with these sellers?
>>
>>3475469
Buy from one that actually shows real pictures. I once bought a stock picture one and got a greatest hits version, the seller obviously knew what he was doing.
>>
>>3475473
But you got what you wanted right? Maybe if I simply ask if it's a greatest hits version... Also I'm looking for Japanese only titles, so I imagine they won't have the greatest hits thing often.

I found Echo Night 2 sealed from Japan only, and it's like 38 USD. Seems all so sketchy to me idk why.
>>
>>3475494
>But you got what you wanted right?

IF that's what you're worrying about, just that, then just look at the rating, that seller has 7094 feedbacks + 99.9% positive feedback

sellers like that that have stock photos don't even have the items. they just know where to buy it, search it out, and if it's still there, they buy it and upsell it to you.
