No point in hanging on to them. To do all the stuff you need to do things in a somewhat certain order but the game is somewhat short and quite easy so it's not a big deal to do it more than once.

Place them down wherever on your first run, then look at a guide for the optimal order.

That's a normal feeling. When I got the game I ended up calling the 900 number so much to get help on wtf I was supposed to do that I ran up an $85 phone bill. My dad was pissed.

The game is really open ended and often obscure about what you need to do to unlock the next thing but you should be able to just limp your way to the final boss. It's trying to get all scenarios that will really drive you crazy.

it can be hard to figure out how to start events some times

lots of them won't happen if you have a partner with you which is kind of annoying if you didn't know that

The entire game is meant to feel like a dream.
Because of this, the overall feeling you'll have while playing is "dude, what".

The location of the land will influence its mana and difficulty.

There are 2 missions that can only be assessed if you have the right amount of mana in a specific land.
Some materials can only be obtained if monsters of a land are strong enough.

Haha, I remember that feeling. I hated LoM at first, but eventually things start to flesh out and get comfy.

I used to start squaresoft games all the time back in the 90's only to get a few hours in and want to start over after getting a better handle on things. I kind of miss those days. Tutorials have the unintended effect of taking the fun out of things.

Not knowing what you're doing is part of the fun. But like was mentioned, you could always look up a guide. I don't really remember getting so stuck that you can't progress, but there's definitely stuff you can miss. But since it can be such a pain to set the game up right, it might not be worth spending that much time on if it starts to bug you.
