I agree with you that it's a great game, but it feels kind of rushed or maybe they just couldn't do what they wanted with the Gameboy.

Miyamoto only directed a couple of them. Takashi Tezuka directed the best ones (3 and world), and the later ones like Galaxy were directed by someone else again.

I wish nintendo had continued the Marioland series on their handhelds. They broke with all the conventions of Mario platformers put keep the very deep core and that was great.

The first more "epic" game I ever played. Still good memories. But it was a bit strange, you are right. I think I have to revisit it some time.

It has no difficulty curve. Every world is about equal in difficulty, except for the final castle stage which is suddenly much harder.

It had some neat worlds though. I liked the forest world, and the haunted house world with all the yokai and Japanese buildings.

I guess one could make the argument that the star stage with Tatanga was somewhat harder than the rest of it, which makes sense cuz he was the boss of the first game.
Could never beat the game as a child since the boss was too hard for me, back then.
