What are some must-have IPS patches for retro games? No total overhauls of retardedly hard new levels, but tweaks or fixes that probably should've been there before?
>>
The FFV and FFVI sound restoration patches for the GBA are a must.
>>
Link to the Past hair hack. I get having some nostalgia for Pink haired Link but it just looks strange when he's blonde in the cutscenes and in every other game.

There's two for the two Street Fighter games on the Genesis that enhances the colors and voices that are must haves.
https://youtu.be/j-Wbub6wV1Q
>>
>>3457525
there are many "enhancement hacks" that do those things you ask for

an example: http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/450/

>>3457573
also the color correction fixes to make them closer to the SNES games
>>
Shinobi III 6 button hack.
>>
>>3457573

Why wouldn't you just play the original? GBA is just supposed to be portable

i hate when there is a decent hack, but it comes bundled with tons of crap. like this one
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/565/
it tweaks the weapon balance, but every other change is shit.

Translation patch for jp version of Ace Combat 3 which been absolutely gutted in EU and NA release.

WotL translation for psx version of FFT, for me its a must-have but some people would see me hanging for it so, its kinda subjective whether its actually a must-have.

Translation patch for front mission 1, FM2, Gun hazzard and alternative.
>>
>>3458352
Because the GBA ports have extra content and better translations.
>>
>>3457525
The metroid saving hack is essential because not only does it add saving but it also adds a map, and the feature to combine the wave and ice beams.
>>
Seconding the music restoration for FFV. I'd personally just play the SNES release of 6 though.
>>3458562
Isn't that still unfinished though?
>>
>>3458592
Why wouldn't you just play ZM at that point?
>>
>>3458595
The AC3 translation I mean. Last I checked it was a WIP.

not him, but it's baby tier in terms of difficulty and forces you to play shitty stealth mission after beating mother brain.
though if i were him, i would only get automap mod since it's a must in 2016(unless you played the game back then).

>>
>>3458562
How are those must haves?
>>
>>3457573
ONLY for FFVI is the sound restoration even beneficial. FFV's was a botched practice run for the author to do his actually good FFVI patch. It's worse than vanilla FFVA.

Was your dad some kind of submariner or something?
>>
>>3458345
You can use a shader to do the same thing, you don't need to patch the game for that.
>>
>>3459207
I don't know what you're talking about, I played through it and it sounded great. Then again I think vanilla FFVA is fine too so whatever.
>>
>>3458359
I haven't tried that patch but I recommend the one by bisqwit that not only fixes the translation but also gives you proper save support and a map.

i second the SF CE sound patch, it takes all the harshness out of the voice samples
>>

Why not just go for the arcade version instead?

A lot of 16-bit RPGs have mods that remove most of the grinding, like Phantasy Star 2 and 7th Saga.

What's the point of playing oldschool rpgs if you hate grinding?

"gee i love Dragon Quest but i hate having to grind between areas, i want a 5 minute game where i just walk from place to place obliterating everything which totally goes against all that the source material stood for"

If you want to play through the first SMT on the snes, then you'll need the Aeon Genesis translation along the patch by Orden that fixes the things the translation broke

http://www.romhacking.net/translations/571/
http://www.romhacking.net/translations/2616/

And you may as well throw in the Automap shortcut so you don't have to go through the menus every time you want to look at the map

For some reason I get stuck at the point where you fight the zombie waves at the execution site. After a few attacks Yuriko keeps repeating the same lines as before the battle. And then the battle begins again.
>>
>>3461898
>>3461918
If I remember correctly you have to make sure you take out all of the zombies without leaving one left or else they all respawn

But now that I think about it, I also had some problems when I didn't patch the game correctly at first. I think it's because the Orden patch already has the translation included, so I probably shouldn't have included that first link. You can use my copy of the game, I passed that part in my playthrough

Kid Chameleon had a small community on its wiki that has made a good amount patches that include new levels anf color scheme. I use to be part of it for a few months back in 2014, I made 2 levels on the rom. Some of the long time users of the wiki site have created new levels entirely which are actually pretty challenging and awesome. They use a map editor that one of their members made, which is unfinnished.

Because the only options are either grinding or god mode, right? Surely there cannot be any happy medium in between.

Posts like this, I wonder whether the poster were really that dense or they were just looking that hard for silly arguments.
>>
>>3461918
Had this same problem, luckily I save scummed a state at the cutscene before. Doing what >>3461978 says worked when it happened to me. Just gotta make sure the zombies are wiped before a certain point
>>
>>3462512
There's no "happy medium". The game is designed with grinding in mind. Grinding is as much part of Dragon Quest as fighting, buying weapons, leveling up, finding new places, etcetera. If you don't like grinding then don't fucking play the game: you sound as retarded as someone saying they want to play DOOM but without all the shooting and demons.
>>
>>3457573
Just play the originals. Even with these supposed restorations they still sound like shit.
>>3460861
Some people like playing the actual game. Not sitting there holding the A button for 25 hours.
>>3462667
DQ games are 100 times better without grinding.
>>
>>3462674
>DQ games are 100 times better without grinding.
you mean 100 times easier because you don't follow the default progression intended by the game and just go mowing through everything like the casual you are
>>
>>3462738
>follow the default progression intended by the game
had it been like in Etrian Odyssey 3 where you can get enough exp by just doing every side quest I'd agree, but in the first DQ it's literally going in circles for hours.
>>
>>3462747
>reach new region
>monsters are too tough
>stay in new region grinding for levels and new equips
>more through region
>find another region even tougher

You might not like this kind of progression but the old Dragon Quest games are all built over it. So if you don't like it why even bother playing? If you don't like capturing and training monsters, don't play pokemon.
>>
>>3462756
>stay in new region grinding for levels and new equips
you mean walk in circles to wait for encounters, press attack and sometimes heal. the first dragon quest has only one party member for fuck's sake, there is no variety, it's the dumbest kind of grind. why not use a patch that saves some time? you'll have to grind until you are sick of it anyway, but not until you want to smash the fucking game.
and i don't mind grinding, but some games just take it too far.
>>
>>3462780
Why not play the SFC版 instead?
>>
Super Metroid: Project Base

Just some sprite work, shortening of the item theme music, some button rework, bullets are a bit faster and charging your gun makes pick-ups zoom in like in Prime. Super Metroid is my favorite game and I'd say Project Base is superior.
>>
>>3458716
so you whine about the remake being casual but you need a patch that casualizes the original game to play it, huh... sounds real smart and not hypocritical
>>
>>3462780
Then don't play the game you retard
