Why was the Red Alert Soviet campaign so fucking awesome? Why were the mission briefing videos so fucking glorious?

I always felt like the soviets were easily the best and the allies were shit.
Probably more balanced than that but as a little kid that's how it was.
As for OP, because you were basically the bad guys so you could let all bad shit flow out guilt free.

This.
In RA1: Soviets > Allies. In RA2: Allies > Soviets.
>started my childhood playing RA2
>tried RA1 after seeing how many people apparently thought RA2 was a bastardization of the franchise
>find RA1 almost unplayable, and barely different from C&C1
Is there something wrong with me?

The best C&C briefing was Kane fired Seth.

Nah, in RA2 they were balanced well. If anything, the Soviets had more options to cripple you early depending on the map (dreadnaught rush was difficult to defend against for example, single terror drone can fuck up your entire economy, etc)
It's in Yuri's Revenge where the soviets suck hard. The allies and Yuri are both way too powerful there. Soviets can only win in tech-limited maps, where desolators have no counter.

Kane is a straight busta

They were, which was obvious if you played RA on multiplayer.
People at OpenRA did amazing job with balancing the fractions without nerfing soviets though.
It has been an honor to serve you.
