What's the best sound emulator for PC-98?
I tried hoot but it sounds off in places. Are there any better alternatives or a way to make hoot itself sound better?

Off in what way?
Hoot automatically disables its low frequency oscillator emulation upon start-up. If you press L, you can toggle between LFO off and LFO on. Having it on makes the sound a lot clearer but sharper, revealing how it purely sounds vs. what you might have heard from PC speakers back then. Every .vgm rip of FM-synth music I've heard keeps this lower end. You can check your Hoot config .ini and find the hotkey bindings.

The FM #1 channel in particular produces this weird metallic sound when it's being used for drums and other things that can't be heard at all in the PC-98 recordings I have of the game I'm listening to the OST of.

What sound chip is that from? There's several options.
Neko Project 2 fmgen is the best emulator for games.

Which track is this channel from? I'll listen to it on my Hoot set-up and record the output if it's different/accurate. For all we know, the inaccurate sound could be a flaw in that Hoot set, which like most others was compiled through obscure methods more than a decade back.
