As for why: the game maintains a balance between horizontal and vertical sections. It does not have any open areas. Horizontal and vertical sections "balance" each other, so any type of movement doesn't wear you down mentally. They expand the movements you perform, and the abilities desirable to perform them. Think of it as two different styles of gameplay switching back and forth, as the character gradually becomes more suited to them.
